On Friday, January 20, 2017, Donald Trump will be inaugurated as President of the United States. It must be made clear to the whole world that the vast majority of people in the United States do not support his presidency or consent to his agenda. Trump and his appointees stand in opposition to the values we embrace as residents of Hawaiʻi Nei. We will never support fascism and we will not sit idly by as the institutions of democracy are destroyed.

Trump is the harbinger of even more climate catastrophe, deportation, discrimination, and endless war. He continues to deny the existence of climate change, in spite of all the evidence, putting the future of the whole human race at stake. We must show that no election could legitimize his agenda. If there is going to be a positive change in this society, we have to make it ourselves, together, through non-violent collective action.
Trump and his surrogates celebrate a “post-fact,” greed-driven society — they embrace violence, racism, misogyny, nationalist xenophobia, homophobia, and transphobia. We recognize that the United States has always struggled to overcome these injustices, but we contend that there is a world of difference between liberal democracy, for all of its flaws, and fascism. Trump’s administration will have a disproportionate, negative impact on the most marginalized members of our society.
We will take to the streets, peacefully but resolutely, to protest injustice, interrupt and disrupt business as usual and inaugurate a new era of social activism. We will learn the principles and strategies of nonviolent resistance, preparing ourselves to march, sit in, walk out, rise up, and make more noise and good trouble than the establishment can bear. We must delegitimize the Trump agenda. It’s time to defend ourselves, our loved ones, and the world that sustains us as if our lives depend on it—because they do.
Channel collective power and solidarity in order to build a group opposing Trump’s administration and the crony-capitalist, white supremacist, xenophobic and colonialist agenda that brought it into being.
