Activists in Thessaloniki who have been resisting a controversial gold mine in their country took some time away from the struggle to show support for Standing Rock resistors who are currently facing heavy fines and trumped up felony charges.

As part of the Week of Solidarity Against Repression, the gold mine fighters demonstrated in Greece’s second largest city with a banner reading, “Skouries. Standing Rock. Different Places, Same Struggle.”
Eldorado Gold’s Skouries mine in Halkidik, Greece has faced fierce resistance from the local community and throughout the country. There have been several battles between protestors and police at the site of the gold mine. The open pit mine threatens hundreds of acres of pristine forests as well as local water supplies. Over 450 people have been arrested in the fight against the mine.
