Today the convention of the fascist AFD party started in Cologne, Germany. In the (very) early morning hours antifa activists started blockades around the Maritim hotel, the location of the AFD convention. Riot cops escorted AFD party members to the convention, about 519 AFD members managed to reach the Maritim hotel. About 4000 cops protected the AFD convention, several water cannons and other armoured police vehicles where used to protect the fascist party.

A big back bloc again and again tried and sometimes managed to stop AFD party members from entering the Maritim hotel. After the blockades black bloc activists made clear to riot cops that the cops should send away their camera van and stop accompany the black bloc with a kind of cordon. The riot cops and the camera van dissapeared in a side street that was offered to the cops to dissapear from the demo.

There where some minor incidents but the protests where mainly peaceful. Only windows of a McDonals branch and a branche of the Commerz Bank where smashed. Some fascists that where observing the counter protests where attacked. Two fascists were about to attack a group of protesters with clubs but after they received a few punches they had to run away.

In the night before cars of prominent AFD members Guido Reil and Peter Knoche where attacked in Essen and Wuppertal, to make it more difficult for AFD members to come to Cologne.

At the party convention the AFD was mainly fighting against itself. It took hours before the convention could really start, as the party members were not able to agree on an agenda. AFD president Petry was not able to put her propositions on the agenda, so they weren’t even discussed. The ongoing power struggle inside the AFD could be decided in favour of the hardline fascists today, tomorrow the convention will continue.

In May there will be state elections in the German state of Northrhine-Westphalia and in September there will be federal elections in Germany.
