#RefugeesGR November 20: Call for Demonstration on #Lesvos

The situation on Lesvos and other Greek islands is escalating more and more. Winter is coming soon and people are still forced to stay on the islands. Many of them sleeping in summer tents. Refugees are protesting with hunger strikes and occupy Sappho square in Mytlini (Lesvos) for weeks now. On November 20 they want to take the streets of Mytilini, we would like to add that those who are not on Lesvos could organize solidarity actions in their own cities and countries on the same day.

#RefugeesGR November 20: Call for Demonstration on Lesvos

The situation on Lesvos and other Greek islands is escalating more and more. Winter is coming soon and people are still forced to stay on the islands. Many of them sleeping in summer tents. Refugees are protesting with hunger strikes and occupy Sappho square in Mytlini (Lesvos) for weeks now. On November 20 they want to take the streets of Mytilini, we would like to add that those who are not on Lesvos could organize solidarity actions in their own cities and countries on the same day.

1951 Refugee Convention is calling for a demonstration on November 20 on Lesvos. On  Facebook published aFacebook event page for the demonstration:

We share the same pain. We share the same struggle. We all suffer from injustice. We all are subjected to oppression from those in power and we struggle against them in different ways.

We need your voice today. We need your conscience. We need your presence. We will protest. We will walk for the liberation of people without refuge.
On the 19th of October more than fourty Children and Women left the camp of Moria and started a sit-in protest in Mytilini. For more than two weeks several people of the group started a hunger strike. Among the hunger strikers there are women and three girls who are minors. The protesters are the same people who have been dispossessed from their homes and forced into exile by the European and American powers. They have been forced into exile by their dirty business, by their gun sales, by their parasitic policies.

These refugees have been forced to leave their homes and cross thousands of kilometres of dangerous distances to find a safe harbour in Europe. Instead they faced imprisonment, deportation, humiliation and torture by the different states and the UNITED NATIONS. These refugees have decided not to return to Moria Camp. They have decided to continue their sit-in occupation of Sappho Square and their dangerous hunger strike. Until the day they will be free to leave this island and be liberated from this open air prison or die because of their hunger strike.

After sleeping in the square for more than one month while exposed to the cold, rain, hunger, humiliation and insecurity. They are disappointed about the total lack of reaction from UNHCR and the Greek state. It is why they have decided to make a peaceful protest march.

We all know very well that the state and the UNHCR will never listen to the call of people who do not have refuge. These are people who do not have any protection from their own governments. We all know that we are the people and we are the only ones who can undo the injustice of the states. We are the people and we have to be each others co-walkers in situations like this.

We call you to create a historical day, when we together call for justice. We request to you to walk with us and call with us our demand of freedom of those who do not have refuge.

We will meet 20th of November at 5 PM in Sappho Square, Mytilini (Lesvos). Be our co-walker!

1951 Refugee Convention is calling for a demonstration, November 13, 2017.
