Don’t Forget Me – Kurdish Music from a Refugee Camp #Twitterkurds

Music is therapy and this is being recognised more and more these days. If you are stuck on a remote pacific island in hellish conditions the outlet provided by music can really help you to stay positive and fulfil some of your dreams amid dank oppression. Taking a Shower at #Moria on #Lesvos: Christmas 2017 in #Europe

I arrived in the Moria camp in the early afternoon. It’s December the 25th and so its Christmas. Like always the smell of burning plastic was everywhere. While many people were celebrating the birth of a refugee in Bethlehem, who was born about 2000 years ago, I went to the Moria camp on Lesvos.

Cars of Hope at #Lesvos: “Despair in Peoples Eyes, Hunger, Broken Shoes, Improvised Tents and Wet Clothes. Welcome to Europe!”

It’s cold on Lesvos. Around 4 or 5 degrees Celsius or even less during the night. The military run Moria camp is on a hill and the wind makes it even feel colder. Images in my head. The same images that I saw many times before on the Balkan route. Despair in peoples eyes, hunger, broken shoes, improvised tents and wet clothes. Welcome to Europe!

On Friday, 15th of December 2017, 209 people from Sierra Leone in the transit camp in Deggendorf, Germany started a ‘strike of closed doors’. In protest, the children and young people refused to attend the German class as access to other educational institutions is denied. The adults haven’t left the accommodation and denied to work in the 80 cents jobs. On Saturday, 16th of December 2017 they started a hunger strike. The protest involves 44 children and young people, as well as 40 women (among them 12 pregnant women) and 125 men. The starting point of the protest was the violent deportation of a man from Sierra Leone on Friday morning, which was stopped in the last minute at the airport.
