Fotomovimiento on #Chios

We published many reports about the situation of refugees on Lesvos in the past weeks. Unfortunally we didn’t manage to come to Chios or one of the other Greek islands to report about the situation there. At the moment the people of Fotomovimiento are on Chios and we re-publish a report that they published on their Facebook page.

Day 9. Chios. The situation in the Vial camp is also an absolute disaster. On a wall there is the phrase of a boy who was here and who has remained as a sign of the suffering of so many people every day. Vial is very far from the center and there are few possibilities for people in the countryside to move.

People are crowded in a space surpassed among garbage. There are a few (but wonderful) volunteers who work tirelessly. The situation in Chios is harder than Lesbos, because it is even more forgotten and less visible. In one of the photos, you can see the space where 100 children (many minors) sleep, separated by plastics and blankets. They say it’s like being in a grave: “It’s like living dead.” At night the rats bite them.

With cold, bad food and locked in this space sometimes up to more than a year. On the island of Chios there are the Nazis of “Golden Dawn”, friends of the police, and with a large number of locals who put black flags on the light poles because they do not want migrants there. They have also installed a tent in front of the camp that watches 24 hours a day. They have come to block containers so that the aid to Vial does not arrive and to attack volunteers. The Europe that comes to us is to start trembling.

Before the inhumanity of Nazis and governments, they are the locals like Antonis and Michalis of the organization #FEOX (photo), who have been fighting for three years, and the girls of “Holes in The Borders”, and Diego, and Víctor and many others, who resist so much hostility and resist to not leave all these people lying in the nothingness.

To say finally, that Greece is alone before a devastating situation. Europe has made it our dumping ground, in what we do not want to see here, in our cities and towns. Shortly we get a documentary of all these days. Open the fucking borders!
