Cops Remove Solidarity with Afrin Banner, YPJ and YPG Flags at Rote Flora in Hamburg

In the night of January 31 activists hung up a solidarity with Afrin banner and flags of the YPJ and the YPG at the front of the Rote Flora squat in Hamburg. In the same night German cops removed the banner and the flags again.

After the repression against the demonstration in solidarity with Afrin in Cologne on January 27 (2018) , the authoritarian German state continues to repress solidarity actions with Afrin and Rojava.

Internationalist and Kurdish youth hung up a banner with the text “Withstand Free Afrin”. Later they also hung up flags of the YPJ and YPG. In March 2017 it seemed that these flags were banned by the German interior ministry, but later the German federal government said that these flags are only forbidden when they are directly related to the PKK, which is banned in Germany.

On an info event about Rojava a lawyer said that even the flag of Abdullah Öcalan is not totally banned in Germany, the Öcalan flag is also only banned when there is a direct connection with the banned PKK. This means that YPJ, YPG and Öcalan flags are only banned on certain occasions like for instance a demo against the ban on the PKK.

But that doesn’t bother the German cops, after they stopped the solidarity with Afrin demo in Cologne on Saturday and repressed several other actions that were held in solidarity with Afrin, they now also removed the banner and the YPJ and YPG flags from the Rote Flora.

It seems that the attack on Rojava is making the German state nervous. Many of the Turkish tanks that are killing people in Afrin, were made in Germany.  According to the research institute Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC), the Turkish army has almost 2500 tanks, 720 of these tanks were produced by German companies. Due to growing pressure the German government postponed a decision about an upgrade for these tanks. German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall is planning to build a factory to be able to upgrade the tanks and to produce new tanks in Turkey.

While Rheinmetall has to wait until the negotiations for a new German government (with the same political parties) are finished, the German state tries to silence the critics. There are solidarity with Afrin and Rojava actions and demonstrations every day and it doesn’t seem to stop.

The activists who hung up the solidarity banner and the flags on the Rote Flora wrote in a statement on German Indymedia: Rojava is a real alternative to capitalist patriarchy – this is why it has to be defended with all means. We call all antifascist, feminist and basic democratic forces to solidarize with the struggle in Afrin and to take the resistance to the streets, everywhere. Like back then in Kobane we have to support the resisting people!”

The mobilzations in solidarity with Afrin and Rojava continue. Tomorrow many people will take the streets across the planet, many of them with flags.
