Netherlands: Climate Demo for Coal-Free Rotterdam

Coal in the port of Rotterdam for another 25 years? That shouldn’t be allowed to happen! Join us on the 9th of March in our march from the Town Hall to the Port of Rotterdam Authority and demand back the control over our port!

23% of Dutch CO2 emissions are produced in the port of Rotterdam. Besides, Rotterdam is the most important coal port in Europe, and can therefore play an important role in ending the era of coal in Europe. We’re asking the city and the port to take this responsibility!

In November, a big majority in the municipality of Rotterdam accepted a motion that asks for the reduction of the trans-shipment of coal, in line with the Paris climate agreement. Still, the Port of Rotterdam Authority and port alderman Adriaan Visser are saying that it is impossible to do anything about the extension of the contract. This is not true! The stakeholders, in this case the municipality (represented by the alderman), can exert influence on the decisions made by the board. Moreover, the alderman can put political pressure on the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

There is no final signature under the lease contract of the Rotterdam coal terminal. This is the moment to come into action and show the port and the alderman that we want a coalfree Rotterdam!

That’s why the Rotterdam Climate Initiative is organising a climate march from the town hall to the Port of Rotterdam Authority. Join us on Friday the 9th of March for a coalfree and sustainable Rotterdam. We’ll start at 13:00 at the Town Hall (City hall) on the Coolsingel. There, we will remind port alderman Adriaan Visser of his responsibilities. He is capable of stopping this climate disaster, but does not want to obstruct the biggest coal terminal in Europe in any way. Next, we will walk over the Erasmus bridge to the Port of Rotterdam Authority at the Kop van Zuid, because the Port of Rotterdam Authority is the one finally signing the lease agreement of the EMO, and they can attach conditions to the contract.

With this march we are demanding back the control over our port. We want a coal free Rotterdam!
