Athens Koukaki: Update from Matrozou 45 Eviction

From Community of Squats in Koukaki

In the early hours of Monday 12, 2018, at about 6am there was an eviction operation of house and struggle Matrozou 45 squat. Comrades who were inside the building at that moment, defended combatively the squat and finally they got detained and headed to ΓΑΔΑ (General Police Office of Athens) at about 9.30am. The detains have already turned into arrests, with misdemeanor charges for ¨disturbance of the peace”. A person has been beaten on the head. Two of the arrested persons had been arrested outside of the building while approaching the squat when the eviction operation had just started.

Cops are still inside the building investigating and despite the pressure of people in solidarity to enter the building they did not let anyone approach. In addition, when we informed them that in a nearby building there were three dogs enclosed, which lived in the squat and were terrified and we had to take them, they were fooling around carelessly for much hour exposing the animals to danger. The dogs of the community are now safe with us. While trying to exit our comrades from the building they threw teargas and “sound bombs”. Except from ΟΠΚΕ (forces of prevention and repression of crime) and ΥΜΕΤ (forces of order restoration) there was also a fire truck and an ambulance.

Along with people in solidarity who had gathered outside shouting slogans, people from the neighborhood had also come out on their balconies and in the street, some of them shouting at the police.
Today, the state is evicting at the same time two more squats in Exarchia, in a coordinated attack at the self-organized structures of struggle.
