Athens: Fascist Attacks in Galatsi and Kallithea

We stand in solidarity with the comrades who were attacked by GD fascists in Kallithea and Galatsi, but at the same time we are under no dellusion that the police or any mechanism of the bourgeois state in general will do anything about it.

The following is a translation of the original post:

KEERFA – UNITED AGAINST RACISM AND THE FASCIST THREAT MOVEMENT

Fascist attacks against comrades during marches (for the anniversary of the greek uprizing against the Ottoman Empire) in Galatsi and Kallithea is the result of government policies of nationalist campaigns

In Kallithea, at the march for the anniversary of 25/3, Golden Dawn neo nazis were isolated by an antifascist gathering. After the march, at the intersection of Davaki and Thiseos streets, some fascis decided to attack a group of KEERFA and SEK (Socialist Labour Party) members, injuring 4. There were about 8-10 fascists, one of which was wearing a hood, another one the uniform of the Greek Special Forces, most of them had shaved heads, and wore black clothes and gloves. They trashed the table of KEERFA, along with the informational material they were distributing.
The police, along with two officials arrived at the point and provided protection for the fascists. Even though the perpetrators were still present and identified by the victims, they were allowed to go free.

At the same time, in Galatsi, some other fascists attacked another group of KEERFA and SEK members, injuring Giorgos Pittas in the face. He is a journalist for Labour Solidarity (SEK’s newspaper).

The fascists are getting more audacious because of the policies of the SYRIZA-ANEL government itself, that is currently trying to intensify Greek capitalism’s role against its competitors (sic) in the Aegean, but also in the Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean in general. The negotiations for Macedonia, the claim for the say in the name and the constitution of the Republic of Macedonia, the competition with Turkey over the control of hydrocarbon deposits and the contracts with multinational corporations, the border control and the pursuits of migrants and refugees in Evros, along with the arrest of the two soldiers on Turkish soil are accompanied by a nationalist campaign by the SYRIZA-ANEL government itself.

The government of SYRIZA-ANEL paves the way for the fascists to reappear and act by choosing the option of chauvinism and faux patriotism. Today’s military marches, the same ones they had pledged to abolish, are breeding grounds for fascists.

The Left and the labour movement need to oppose this nationalist campaign, which gives the Right and the far-Right the opportunity to grow, organize nationalist demonstrations amd allows the fascists of Golden Dawn to get back out in the streets along with their assault squads. Our answer to prevent the wars and the rise of the fascists is the solidarity of working people from the Balkans and Turkey, to Cyprus and the Middle East. We don’t need a new course of military equipment at the same time that wages and pensions are getting cut. We need organized struggle to put an end to the competitions that result in wars.

It is provocative of ERT (state TV channels), which does not cover the attacks of fascists, to offer a platform to Kasidiaris -who is facing charges – at the same time that discussions are taking place in the Parliament about banning the whole gang for 15 days.

We urge the Left and the unions to stand against fascist attacks and place themselves in the frontline of a new round of struggles against austerity, privatizations, but also the nationalist campaign that paves the way for military involvements and the rize of fascism.

We demand that the fascists are apprehended and the officers who protected them in Kallithea to face consequences.

P.S.: In the photo you can see Giorgos Pittas, journalist of Labor Solidarity”
