Germany: Cops raided kurdish NAV-DEM association in Hannover

German cops raided the Democratic Kurdish Society Center (NAV-DEM) in Hannover yesterday morning. During the raid dozens of cops were deployed, but people were allowed to get into the building.

In the early morning hours at least 7 police vans drove to the NAV DEM building. Eleven days before yesterdays raid NAV DEM went to the courts of Cologne and Düsseldorf. NAV DEM started to take legal action against the ban on NAV DEM demonstrations earlier this year. Police authorities in Cologne banned demonstrations in solidarity with Afrin, saying that NAV DEM is a follow-up organization of the banned PKK. The cops didn’t deliver any proof of their claim but banned the demonstrations anyway and also stated that they would ban any NAV DEM demonstration in the future. With the legal action NAV DEM wants to stop the cops from banning demonstrations with claims like the one above without delivering any proof.

Police authorities in Hannover also banned the Newroz demonstration in Hannover on March 17. After a coalition of groups and individiuals called “Kulturschaffende für den Frieden” registered the demo again and went to court to fight the ban of the Newroz demo in Hannover. The coalition won, so the demo took place. But the coalition stated at that time that it seems that the German state is preparing a ban on NAV DEM. Yesterdays raid should be seen as part of these preparations.

The cops confiscated books, computers, flags of the YPG and YPJ and other materials. The confiscated material was transported to police headquarters. In front of the building people protested against the raid. It seems the cops were woried about a possible answer, the Turkish consulate in Hannover was guarded by riot cops during the raid.
