Cops attacked autonomous #MayDay demo in #Wuppertal, Germany

The attack against this years autonomous mayday demo is relevant for everybody in the German state North Rhine Westphalia (NRW)! When the state is getting away with it’s repressive policies, the marginalization and dismantling of autonomous, left or any kind of emancipatory politics will be pushed stronger and stronger. That’s the reason why we call for multifarious solidarity actions!

Cops attacked autonomous May Day demo in Wuppertal, Germany

Since 31 years the autonomous May Day demo is marching through Wuppertal. Sometimes the demo was attacked by cops more, sometimes less. But it was always clear that the unregistered demo would arrive sooner or later at the street  party at Schusterplatz. This year, the 32nd edition, and at the instigation of the state government the cops attacked the autonomy on the streets we fought for!

A the starting point of the demo, Platz der Republik, the cops announced that they would not let the demo march without somebody registering the demo. The cops blocked all accesses to Platz der Republik and with their masked martial appearance they made clear that they would not let the good tempered May Day demo march on this day. The cops whetted through the playground in full riot gear , annoying the parents that where standing around. The protesters remained calm after this and other brazenness by the cops and at first circled the square. Then they marched calmly to a police line. That alone was to much for the uninhibited state servants. They immediately used pepper spray and their batons brutally went down hard on unprotected bodies. The protesters had to retreat to the Platz der Republik because of the brutal violence of the cops. The cops indiscriminately catched about 25 people and after they were kettled for about 2 hours, the cops transported them to police headquarters. Inhuman behaviour by the cops was not only taking place during the kettle, where they tried to seperate one person of colour from the rest of the kettle, but also in the bus that brought people to police headquarters. Cops told detainees to pee in a bottle, although people demanded to be allowed to go to the toilet for more than 3 hours. At police headquarters the cops took pictures and identified the detainees. Although one friend was injured she/he was released after several hours. At police headquarters the people affected were not alone for long. About 80 people showed solidarity and came from the street party at Schusterplatz to police headquarters to demand the release of their friends.

That the autonomous May Day was surpressed by cops is the continuation of the repressive policies of the new state government. They already showed their understanding of the right to demonstrate during many demos of the Kurdish movement. Any kind of refractory behaviour, even when it’s gentle or diffidently was prosecuted hard and harassed. The state wants to enforce a completely adapted behaviour with batons. After the staionary gathering several small groups took the streets and marched to Schusterplatz to resist and to show that people take their rights: loud, taking space and visible. On their way to Schusterplatz the protesters were confronted with sexualized violence by cops. They grabbed someone in his genitial area and threatened him with violence. The themasized deserved protection of self-detemination of our bodies during the night demo on the previous day was punished with physical repression and assaults on the next day.

The attack against this years autonomous mayday demo is relevant for everybody in the German state North Rhine Westphalia (NRW)! We returned from the French territory. On Saturday we will report from the demo in solidarity with Afrin and Rojava and against arms manufacturer Rhein Metall in Düsseldorf, Germany. Later this year we plan to return to France, Greece and other territories to produce independent on the ground reporting.  But we need your support to cover at least some of our expenses (Travel costs, sim cards etc).
