We are excited to reprint the below statement from our Cuban anarchist comrades announcing the opening of the ABRA social center and library in Habana today May 5, 2018. Comrades with the Taller Libertario Alfredo López and allied groups have been working for over 10 years to rebuild an anarchist presence in Cuba and the establishment of a permanent space for social and political activities represents a tremendous step forward. The International Relations Committee of Black Rose/Rosa Negra (BRRN) has sent a message of revolutionary greetings and solidarity – we wish the comrades of ABRA great success!

Cuban Anarchists Announce Opening of ABRA Social Center
From Cuba a new stage begins this May 5th 2018 for the self-emancipatory process of a group of Cubans with the opening of ABRA: Centro Social y Biblioteca Libertaria (Social Center and Libertarian Library).
This effort of the Taller Libertario Alfredo López (an anarchist, anti-authoritarian, and anti-capitalist initiative created in 2012 and which forms a part of the Federación Anarquista del Caribe y Centroamérica [Anarchist Federation of the Caribbean and Central America]) along with the effective and crucial involvement of related collectives such as Observatorio Crítico Cubano, Guardabosques, and other individual initiatives intends to build an autonomous and sustainable space in Cuba today.
A space to promote experiences and practice independent of any foreign or national government, or the institutions which represent them, and focused on the capabilities of those involved. From ABRA we will insist on a practice which prefigures the kind of sociability that we dream of and in friendly relations with the environment, which results in a minimum consumption with a maximum of clean solutions of our own.
This new effort is essentially anti-capitalist because capitalism promotes the type of relationship between people based on utilitarianism, supremacy, competition, profit, all of which does not lead to the sociability we strive for. That is the thinking that is maintained by states, businesses and corporations that dominate and pillage the world and our country. Because of that, the Social Center is completely contrary to the latter.
Moreover, emancipation is not possible without taking part in communities. They are why ABRA exist inside and as a part of them, alongside the oppressions they suffer and the victories they achieve in their struggle. Similarly, it gets involved in the dynamics of resistance and the creation of other similar groups, which we integrate in our Center and our projects. ABRA intends to support a space for all of those sociabilities, people, and groups with affinities, who think beyond the narrow approach of the conflict between the government and the opposition, and who consider a direct and self-organized approach of the different topics of everyday life, and the creation in all aspects of reality.
This space is actively against discrimination by race, ethnic origins, gender, sexuality, sexual orientation, gender identity, territory, level of education, economic status, and any other form thereof in detriment of the dignity of people. Additionally, it recognizes the diversity of thoughts (political, ideological, moral, etc.), never to give up the materializing of ours.
ABRA is delivered as a place for confraternity, in the middle of a commercialized and watched city, and it offers a space opposite to the counter-information spread at a local, national, and international level, and in favor of self-taught training, commemorations, celebrations, encounters; looking to encourage the precarious counter-cultural scene, which is productive and self-sufficient, that currently exists in La Habana and the region of Cuba.
The Social Center was constituted as a space of horizontal social communication to give a voice to those national and international experiences which are not in the interests of the hegemonic agencies, but that offer an anti-authoritarian and emancipatory perspective which is in fact in the interests of us who struggle in Cuba.
Here, means and ends are not contradictory: They are horizontal, of free individuals, and the effective participation out of direct involvement.
