Bosnian/Croatian border: Tear gas and batons against open border protesters

On Monday about 250 refugees protested for open borders on the Croatian(Bosnian border in Velika Kladuša, Bosnia. The Croatian police used tear gas and batons to stop people from crossing the border.

“Why are they stopping me? Why can’t I cross the border? My wife is pregnant, the baby will come in ten days. She is in Zagreb.” The desperate young man shows me his bag. It’s full of baby stuff. It’s one of the many stories I heard at the Croatian border on Monday.

Earlier people protested for open borders and tried to cross the border. But they were stopped with tear gas and batons by Croatian riot cops. Several people were injured. After the brutal intervention by Croatian cops there was a standoff for several hours. Bosnian cops tried to deescalate at the border and in the early evening most people went back to the makeshift camp in Velika Kladuša, Bosnia. Desperate, frustrated and angry. The European Union showed it’s inhuman and ugly face once again.

In the past days we (The Cars of Hope collective and SOS Team Kladuša and people who are living in the camp) have build 22 emergency shelters for about 110 at the makeshift camp. People without secured shelters are sleeping (mainly rough) in abounded buildings, at locals homes and outside on the streets. Every day new people arrive, so we continue to build shelters. The self-organized collectives finance this operation and are depending on donations to continue their work.

Other things that are being financed and organized are shoes, food, showers (by No Name Kitchen) and first aid. Our working days often start at 09:am and end around 11pm. Long hard days but we meet a lot of great people and learn a lot from each other.

The makeshift camp is growing every day and could develop in a new Idomeni. People have a lack of about anything in the camp and hearing the remarks of politicians of EU member states in EU media makes me sick. The open racist debate, the closed borders and stopping rescue ships from entering Italian harbors increase the suffering more and more. Borders kill and EU states don’t care, so where will this end?

It’s up to us to stop the killing at sea and to stop the suffering. Apart from mutual aid, we need to organize ourselves in the EU member states. We have to put pressure on the EU border policies and attack the openly racist discourse in Europe. The racists are loud, too loud. The right is getting stronger but we are still higher in numbers. We should take the initiative back and force the racists back into the rat holes where they came from.

We urgently need financial support to maintain the supplies for refugees and to be able to keep on building emergency shelters.

Please donate for food, tents and other things for everyday life.
