#Antifa #London, UK: Statement on Saturdays opposition to fascist free Tommy demo

London, UK: After the short report about the antifascist counter actions against the fascist Free Tommy demo that we published yesterday, we publish a statement by London Antifascists.

STATEMENT ON YESTERDAY’S OPPOSITION TO FREE TOMMY DEMO:

Less than a month ago London saw one of the biggest far-right demonstrations in British history. 15,000 fascists marched under the false banner of “free speech” in response to their leader Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, aka Tommy Robinson, being jailed for contempt of court, with minimal opposition. What his far-right supporters claimed to be a “peaceful demonstration” soon turned into hours of rioting in central London. Some fascists have since been arrested.

Yesterday, after many weeks of mobilising and a coordinated campaign by militant anti-fascists in London and nationally, we were able to bring thousands on to the streets to defend London from the fascists who attempted their “Free Tommy” protest. Far-right numbers were estimated at around 4000 to 6000, significantly less than the previous month. Anti-fascists brought at least upwards of 3000, significantly more than last time, where anti-fascists made up around 300 at a push.

Several prominent members of the RMT union were attacked by fascists in the Westminster Arms pub during the demonstration yesterday. This sends a clear message that Tommy Robinson supporters are not representative of working class interests, but a violent mob who will use any means to push their fascist ideology. They are class traitors and what is needed is collective resistance, this is our collective fight.

We set out to be a tight, militant bloc of anti-fascists who were prepared to defend the larger demonstration against any anticipated fascist attacks, and we succeeded, mobilising 300-400 anti-fascists to our bloc. Some attempts were made by pro Tommy thugs but they were quickly driven back by militant anti-fascists. We set out to bring more people out on to the streets to oppose the far-right, and we succeeded. A broad coalition of dedicated anti-fascists and anti-racists took to London defiantly drowning out and facing down fascist thugs.

London is anti-fascist and we will defeat the fascist creep!
