SATURDAY 8/12 at 19:00 in Papoutsadiko squat, Haidari (Davaki 20), Athens, Greek territory.
Hambacher Forst is an ancient forest in the area of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany that is approximately 12,000 years old and where a big variety of plant and animal species live, some of which are close to extinction. Defenders of the earth have occupied the forest for six years now, since April 2012, fighting against the destruction of the forest and the extraction of lignite. They have to face the multinational energy company RWE which legally “owns” the forest, the local government of North Rhine-Westphalia and the central government of Germany.
The occupation has faced repression a lot of times, including a complete eviction in 2014, after which it was re-occupied. Since October 2018, one of the most intense operations is taking place, which until now is counting dozens of prosecutions and arrests, as well as the death of a journalist. However the struggle continues.
There is a big number of people involved in the struggle of Hambacher Forst with different backgrounds, and a variety of means and technics used to advocate for the forest and chase out the ones who exploit it. The occupation is getting support from more radical movements as well as institutional organisations. This starts an interesting discussion on what means of struggle we choose each time, what needs each movement has, regarding to its context, the place and time, the different tendencies that it attracts and finaly the question of who we want or not want to fight with.
*there will be a distro with zines about total liberation of animals and the earth
