Welcome to #NRW, where people can be imprisoned up to 28 days without being charged

After Bavaria, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) will be the second German state with a new police law. On Wednesday NRW state parliament voted in favour of the new police law. Cops can now imprison people up to  28 days without being charged. But that’s not all…

Of course the social democrats of the SPD betrayed the people of NRW once again. Its a kind of tradition of the SPD that is lasting for more than 100 years now. The SPD which is an opposition party in NRW state parliament voted in favor of the new police law, together with the governing CDU und FDP.

With the new police law cops cannot only imprison people for up tp 28 days without charges, the separation between German secret services and the cops was also sacrified in order to continue with the formation of the authoritarian state. The cops are now officially allowed to monitor messengers like WhatsApp.

The cops can now also forbid people to be at certain locations, like for instance the place where a demonstration or a soccer game will take place or give them electronic tags and can give they them house arrest. All these measures can be implemented without charges, but because the cops THINK somebody MIGHT commit a severe crime. But it’s not clear defined what a severe crime actually is. Were the NoG20 clashes in Hamburg (2017) a severe crime? When it comes to NRW minister of interior Herbert Reul probably yes. Reul spoke about activists in Hambacher Forest as criminals. In case you don’t remember: the resistance in Hambacher Forest was stiff, but peaceful.

Imagine there would be a wave of resistance like the Gilets Jaunes protests or events like the December 2008 revolt on the Greek territory. In NRW they could simply imprison all people for weeks because they MIGHT participate. At one point this could also be used against people like me, but let’s not forget that the first people who were imprisoned without charges in Bavaria, where refugees. After that an antifascist was imprisoned who wanted to go to an antifascist counter protest against the AFD. The cops also stopped a train in Bavaria with activists that were on their way to protests against an EU summit in Sazlburg, Austria. The new Bavarian police law made it possible and there is no reason to believe that it will be different in NRW.

In NRW the law will probably also be used to silence refugees and to step up the repression against activists in Hambacher Forest. Reul will certainly do his RWE friends this favour. These climate criminals do anything they can to continue with the destruction of the earth. The fact that the nitrogen dioxide cloud above Rhineland (NRW) ist the biggest in the European Union and hard coal and lignite power plants cause 4,350 premature deaths/year in Germany alone doesn’t seem to bother Reul and his RWE friends. Instead Reul worked hard for more powers for the cops  in order to crack down on the climate justice movement and other activists.

Only one thing remains the same. Capitalism and its climate criminals need an authoritarian state and the climate catastrophe will kill us all if we don’t don’t stop them. Continue to resist, intensify it and use a variety of different tactics. We have to get rid of the capitalist system and its authoritarian states.
