It has been more than 30 days since the beginning of the prison hunger strike against injustice in Chiapas. There are now 20 striking prisoners. This communiqué comes from the Working Group No Estamos Todxs.
Note: Enough 14 is not organizing any of these events, we are publishing this text for people across the US and Europe to be able to see what is going on and for documentation only.
Communiqué: 30 days since the beginning of the hunger strike against injustice
San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas
12 April 2019
30 days since the beginning of the hunger strike against injustice…
30 days fighting for their freedom and for freedom…
30 days of struggle and resistance inside the prison…
And we continue…
30 days during which our compañeros have not eaten solid food, only ingesting water and honey.
Try to imagine what it feels like when you leave home without breakfast, or after a few hours without eating and how your body begins to demand nutrients needed to live, and your belly starts growling. And imagine how it feels to go a month without chewing or tasting. Your body starts struggling to survive because of your decision to put your life at risk. Can you imagine that?
We don’t have to imagine it. We have witnessed the physical and emotional deterioration of our compañeros first hand. Visit after visit we have seen their health deteriorating. Their pants no longer fit. Sometimes they need something to hold them up. We see their faces and expressions transform, as skin loses its color and feels colder because they lack calories. Each visit they are more tired and exhausted.
We have also witnessed the pain families, friends, and compañeros are going through.
But we have also felt their strength, integrity and dignity, and a moral greatness that would be hard to describe in words.
Can you imagine a place where a person has to go to these extreme limits in order to be heard? This is not some kind of imaginary exercise. This is happening right now.
Since the beginning of this hunger strike on March 15, we have demanded that a responsible and competent state agency review our comrades files to show the irregularities. They have always asked that the torture cases, which many of them have denounced, be investigated and evaluated. And we look to mechanisms of justice and truth, so that this situation is never repeated.
We are not naive. We have learned that the people who are responsible for putting them in the hell of prison are also the ones responsible for releasing and giving back their freedom.
It is for this reason that we demand a direct and open dialogue for the immediate release of our comrades. Today we recognize that this lawsuit is a triumph in this struggle.
There are 20 legal files that have to be reviewed, 20 broken lives, 20 short stories of people’s lives being claimed. And now our comrades are giving 20 days to have this dialogue to revise the cases and files.
In the next 20 days, as an act of “faith,” our comrades are going from a hunger strike to a partial fast while waiting for the results. They will stay strong in their struggle for freedom, if that is possible. They will continue to be inside the prison, where they are carrying out their political action, and will only eat food, if necessary, to maintain their health to return to the hunger strike.
For those who are putting their lives on the line in order to demand justice, this is a new step forward. They will return with all the strength and determination that is needed. Appropriate actions will be taken if there is no clarity, urgency, willingness, and a steady flow of information on the progress of the cases.
The hunger strikers are not going to stop, they are not going to back down, they are not going to give up.
We are not going to stop, we are not going to stop supporting them, we are going to be there with them.
Until we are all free!
Until we are all free!
