Cologne, May 28 2019: In the run-up to the next Ende Gelaende-Mass action in Rhineland, RWE is taking legal action against the press spokeswoman from Ende Gelaende. Last week, the Climate Alliance spokeswoman received a letter from the coal group’s law firm in which they ban her from the opencast mines and demand a cease-and-desist declaration. They refer to her coal-critical public relations work and her speech at the RWE Annual shareholders meeting on May 3, 2019 in Essen. At the same time, the Ende Gelaende alliance is preparing for the next mass action of civil disobedience in the Rhenish lignite mining area. From June 19 until 24, thousands of people will block coal mining around the Garzweiler opencast mine.

The person concerned, press spokesperson Kathrin Henneberger comments: “RWE is trying to silence me. I will not be intimidated by large coal companies like RWE, which are burning our future. As a Rhinelander, I cannot stand idly by and watch how my home is a place that causes great global suffering. I see it as my responsibility to prevent the destruction of the earth – even with civil disobedience. Together with thousands of people we will stop the big excavators with our bodies. We demand the immediate exit of coal as an emergency brake in the face of the climate crisis.”

“The letter from RWE’s attorneys reads like a helpless panic reaction of the corporation. They know that their popular support is dwindling and will try to slow us down and silence us in the coming months and years. The age of fossils is over, and the young climate movement is creating a new world where there is no room for short-term profits at the expense of the future.”

The Alliance calls to speak out against the corporation under the hashtag #AlleGegenRWE (In English #AllAgainstRWE) and continue to disobey.
