#JusticePourSteve: French authorities ban demo to commemorate #SteveCaniço

Steve Maia Caniço, 24 years old, has been missing since 21 June 2019. On the 21st of June many young people celebrated the Fête de la Musique on a peninsula near Nantes, on the banks of the river Loire. Steve was one of them. Until the cops came… The cops attacked the party with loads of tear gasand many people fled, panic broke out, many fell several meters down an embankment into the Loire. Fourteen people were pulled out of the river by the fire brigade. Steve’s body was found in the Loire on July 29.

Image above says: “Black anger (it’s an expression in French) for Steve. Black bloc. Saturday 3 August, everyone to Nantes. Neither forgotten nor forgiven. No justice, no peace.”

Before his body was found people again and again chanted “Where is Steve”. During the French national holiday on July 14, Gilets Jaunes activists chanted the slogan as Macron was leading the military parade on the Champs Élysées in Paris.

After Steve’s body was found severl protests took place across France. Last night the cops attacked protesters with tear gas in Nantes and other cities. There is a huge mobilzation across France for a demonstration on August 3 in Nantes. Today the prefect of Loire-Atlantique banned the demonstration but its questionable people will stay home. Probably it will make them only more angry.

The Gilets Jaunes info in English Facebook page translated a text, explaing what happened in a video of the police attack on June 21. The was published by French mainstream media Liberation:

“New video footage of the incident that led to the death of Steve Maia Caniço has been shared. The police use tasers, gas and dogs, advancing on a group of young people, ignoring the desperate cries of “The Loire is behind them!” from bystanders.

Later in the video, we see young men climbing over the rocks by the river to escape armed riot officers. Then the police ignore someone yelling that some young men have fallen into the water. The police launch tear gas grenades in the direction of the river as bystanders plead with them to stop. Officers are seen beating and gassing people near the rocks next to the river.

Later still someone pleads with the police, “Some guys jumped into the river because of the gas! You need to go and find them now!!” The police respond with more tear gas. It would be over a month before the body of one of those young men would finally be found.

The government denies there was a charge and have stated that there was ‘no link’ between the police raid and Steve’s death.”

Here is another video of the attack:
