January 17, 2020, on the eve of the three-month Revolt of a people who fight until dignity becomes a habit. We cross the representative points that the people have been able to build: from the corner of the Mauricio Fredes mural to the medical point of the Blue Cross brigade, from kilometer 0 where Radio Dignity was installed to the emblematic square with the same name.
A flag crosses the street of a crushed city with the legend ” ACAB-emos with the police state “; another one rises in the middle of the Square sentencing that ” We are the fire that they will not be able to extinguish “; in the surroundings, where the mothers of the First Line give away food made with all the love, another flag rises asking if “it is possible to make a party hiding dead under the carpet”. Mapuche, anarchists, black flags with the star, by Victor Jara, fly with the dance of the stones, or as they are called here, with the “camotes”.
From the very centre of the Square, the earth that a truck had spilled a few days earlier is dug up to carry stones to the points of resistance. The advance and retreat of the First Line like that of the pacos (cops, Enough 14) with their “guanacos” and “zorrillos” is constant. The organization is present: shield bearers, camoteros, media, slingshots, water with laurel and bicarbonate, lasers and musicians fulfill their role although at times the events of the insurrection make this organizational scheme diluted. It will be a matter of deepening the organizational level in these sectors so that every time resistance is exercised there will be no injuries and to expel the murderous mercenaries with strategy, organization and dignified rage.
This organization allows the Front Line to stop the repressive advance of the pacos so that the square can be a celebration of struggle. Songs, dances, feminist and dissident cultural expressions, the popular joy that emanates from the drums and cymbals of the chinchinerxs (urban street performers, Enough 14) and even a football match. Some artistic expressions are shared between the joy and the celebration of the Plaza de la Dignidad as in the points of struggle where “the cabrxs” fight. When the musicians arrive at the front line, the morale of the group is raised, depending on the stage of the fight, from the most festive to the most combative.
Bonfires illuminate a sunset in which one breathes struggle, care, violence, love and solidarity among all the people present. The black smoke from these fires also dissipates the tear gas and reaches a dark sky announcing a new way of living that is being built here and now.
