#Cologne: Protest against the new state government in #Thuringia – Loud and determined demo – #FDP meeting disrupted

In several cities on the German territory people took the streets to protest against the election of new state prime minister Kemmerich (FDP). Yesterday the FDP candidate prevailed by a narrow majority of one vote. This was supported by the votes of the CDU and the fascist AfD. Thuringia is to be governed in the future by a prime minister supported by the AfD and this prime minister was obviously not too sorry to accept the help of the fascists for his opportunistic intentions. Spontaneous demonstrations took place across the German territory. To give you a few numbers (participants at the spontaneous demos): Aachen: 200, Berlin: 3000, Bielefeld: 400, Bonn: 150, Düsseldorf: 200, Erfurt: 3000, Frankfurt: 1000, Hamburg: 2000, Hannover: 400, Jena: 3000, Köln: 500, Leipzig: 1200 – 1600 . A report from the demo in Cologne.

Cologne. February 5, 2020: Today in Cologne, more than 500 people spontaneously took to the streets to express their anger against the new government of Thuringia, which is supported by the CDU and AfD. Afterwards, some activists disrupted the crisis meeting of the FDP Cologne in order to make them responsible for the first participation of the AfD in a government at state level.

This morning the members of the Thuringian state parliament elected a new Minister President. Here, the FDP candidate prevailed by a narrow majority of one vote. He was supported by the votes of the CDU and AfD. Thuringia is to be governed in the future by a prime minister supported by the AfD and this prime minister was obviously not too sorry to accept the help of the fascists for his opportunistic intentions. This fact represents a further breach of the dam in the current continuous shift to the right in Germany. We see it as an attack on all workers, migrants, women and the left movement in Germany. The taboo of cooperation between the so called democrats of the bourgeois middle and the openly fascist AfD in Thuringia has now been officially buried.

In the end we see again and again what has been repeated today in state parliament. As often as the liberals and conservatives distance themselves from the fascists. One thing will always have top priority for them: They don’t want under any circumstances to let the left win. Even if it is in the form of a rather right-wing left-wing party led by Ramelow.

The federal leaders of the CDU and FDP as well as the local representatives in Cologne have already distanced themselves and are acting upset one week after the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp by the Red Army. We don’t believe these embarrassing lies, like many others. A government that is still expanding Fortress Europe and does not want to get right terror against leftists and migrants under control cannot be a partner for us in the fight against the right. We must also fight this struggle against this very state itself.

For this reason, in Cologne as in many other cities today, people spontaneously joined together and demonstrated against the shift to the right on the streets and in the parliaments. About 500 people spontaneously gathered in front of the party headquarters of the Cologne FDP and shouted slogans like “Who betrayed us? Free Democrats” or “FDP – fat cats pack – We’re sick and tired of you”. In several speeches the connection of the fight against the right with feminist struggles or the climate justice movement was also made clear. Afterwards a demonstration marched through the rush hour traffic of the city centre to the town hall where the CDU was meeting. Finally, a part of the protestors made their way to the meeting place of the FDP, occupied it and confronted the local party officials. After a short time all of them left the rooms voluntarily. After leaving the building, the activists were attacked several times by the police, who were initially overtaxed, but according to the present status, no arrests were made.

This evening has shown us once again that if we want to defend ourselves against the shift to the right, we can only rely on ourselves and our solidarity. Neither the bourgeois parties, no matter how anti-fascist they appear at events, nor the cops are on our side. We need a determined and militant anti-fascism which shows solidarity with all feminist, social and ecological movements.

All together against fascism!!!
