No UDT! Rotterdam, stop arms fairs!

From May 26 to 28, 2020, the Undersea Defense Technology (UDT) arms fair is taking place in Ahoy Rotterdam. The UDT is the largest trade show for underwater weapons in the world. It is a place where the military industry meets with policy makers, officials and soldiers to promote its new deadly products. In addition to the devastating role these products play in ongoing wars, the sonar technology that the military industry sells also has deadly consequences for underwater animals such as whales, dolphins and porpoises.
UDT exhibitors such as Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Damen and Thales are involved in arms deliveries to countries in war and human rights abusers (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Israel, Chad, Turkmenistan), in nuclear weapons and in militarizing borders.
With this, the UDT and other arms exchanges play a pivotal role in a trade that feeds wars, internal conflicts, repression and human rights violations. The huge amounts of money that the world spends on developing and buying weapons comes at the expense of meaningful spending on health, education, housing, sustainable development, and poverty alleviatio. Weapon companies earne big money from death and destruction.
In recent years several European cities have spoken out against arms fairs. This concerns, for example, Amsterdam, Glasgow and Cologne. Sink UDT! calls on the municipality of Rotterdam to follow these examples, to declare UDT undesirable and to urge Ahoy to ban the arms fair. We wrote a letter to this effect to the city council, which meets on Thursday, February 20. At the door of the town hall we stand with banners and flyers to reinforce our call and to inform people. Come and join!
