Turkey is trying to blackmail the EU by opening the border – with people who move in the hope of protection in Europe. This was not unexpected. Already when the so-called EU/Turkey deal came into effect, there were warnings of this scenario. The German government – and thus the CDU/CSU and SPD – played a decisive role in the creation of this agreement.
And now? Greek military firing. With water cannons, stun grenades, tear gas, rubber bullets and firearms, people seeking protection are kept away from the border. If people try to flee to Europe by sea, the Greek (and other EU member states, Frontex, Enough 14) state threatens them with dozens of warships. If they make it to Lesvos, however, people are attacked by fascists. The president of the EU Commission von der Leyen sends Frontex troops into action – 3 weeks after the racist attacks in Hanau, Europe is living a dream of the far right.
The mark is set: The EU will protect the Greek border with all means. Human rights no longer play a role.
Our response to this barbarization and right-wing terror in the EU can only be the society of the many and our solidarity – solidarity with human lives.
There are 139 safe havens and many municipalities in Germany that are ready to receive refugees. We demand that the city of Wuppertal join the existing 139 safe havens and declare its willingness to accept refugees.
There is only one thing we can do to combat powerlessness: act with determination!
They can keep building walls around Europe, but that won’t help. If their borders kill, we don’t need borders. If the EU breaks human rights, we can only rely on ourselves. If its policy lets the people in Moria perish, we will oppose that policy with all our power.
Even when we are not on the ground, we can and must fight for human lives and our social cohesion! We must force the responsible politicians to stop this policy immediately.
We will not tolerate your murderous compartmentalization!
Let us disobey and stand up for each other this week!
Our voice must become louder than that of the far-right lobbyists.
This is a call to all. For human rights without borders, for our rights.
