Most people will have seen them, the pictures and videos of police violence on the Greek-Turkish border in Evros. Rubber dinghies in distress that are ignored by Frontex ships, while the Greek Coast Guard literally attacks the rubber dinghies. Shots are fired both in the Aegean Sea and at the Greek/Turkish land border in Evros. Many of these shots are warning shots, but there are first casualties and deaths both on land and at sea. People who have died from bullets or who drowned.

The Greek military and police are supported by armed “civilians”. On Lesbos and Chios organized fascists together with so-called “concerned citizens” terrorize refugees, journalists and workers of NGOs and self-organized groups. People are beaten, cameras of journalists are taken and/or demolished, a building on Chios, where food, dressing material and clothes for refugees were stored, was burned down.
More and more aid workers and journalists are leaving Greece. Structures that support refugees threaten to collapse. Some activists of Cars of Hope sat together earlier this week and decided to travel to Greece this month. Now even more so!
Through our work in countries such as Hungary, Serbia and Bosnia, we have gained a lot of experience with state repression and racist attacks. This experience will not protect us from possible attacks, but it will help us to assess and deal with threatening situations. We have decided to go to Greece right now because we believe that support is more necessary than ever.
After our last two visits in Greece, in December 2019 and January 2020, our bank account is almost empty. In order to support as many people as possible, we are depending on your help.
We thank you in advance! Without you our work would not be possible!
