Greek Photojournalist’s Association: Reports Terrorism and Obstruction to their work in Lesvos

It calls on the Government to intervene and safeguard the people’s right to information
The Association of Photojournalists of Greece complains that executive agents systematically obstruct, terrorize and detain photojournalists. They call on statehood and government to intervene effectively and safeguard the right of the Greek people to information.

The announcement – complaint of the Association:

“We are saddened once again to report the violent incidents and the obstruction to the function of our colleagues who are covering the events in Lesvos.

In spite of our call on March 1st 2020 regarding the injury of a foreign colleague, by which we called on the competent State authorities to investigate thoroughly the violent incidents against colleagues and to impose liability, not only did we find no such disposition, but on the contrary, State authorities, such as some port and police officers, systematically hinder, terrorize, and detain colleagues when covering events involving immigrants or refugees. Even they were brought to justice with absolutely no reason for, they undertook long hours “examinations” at police departments, so that they prevent the journalists coverage of events.

Once again we repeat that it is the least, that it is unreasonable in 2020 to “shoot the messenger” when and whenever we do not like the news he brings. These acts are both unacceptable and immoral in a favored state.
We call on the Statehood and Government to intervene effectively and safeguard the right of the Greek people to information, while at the same time ensuring the safety and integrity of colleagues as they should. “
