Temuco. Chile. On February 27, Mapuche political prisoners, Celestino Córdova and Juan Cheuqueta, began a hunger strike. On March 3, non-Mapuche prisoner, Benjamin Méndez, joined the strike, and has refused to take in food or liquids, sewing his mouth shut.
Their demands: 1. Transfer of all Mapuche and non-Mapuche prisoners who adhere to the social demands to a Center of Education and Work; 2. A special module for Indigenous prisoners which can facilitate their cultural practices; 3. Modification of the prison law no. 518; 4. Land, territory and natural resources for Mapuche people.
A march has been convoked for March 25 at 10:30 am in the Plaza Hospital in Temuco, Chile in solidarity with the prisoners in struggle.
INFORMATION REGARDING THE DRY STRIKE OF THE FREEDOM FIGHTER FOR THE COMMON CAUSE BENJAMIN MÉNDEZ ZAMORANO
We want to make known that in response to the call made by the Mapuche Political Prisoners to join the mobilization started by Juan Cheuqueta Cheuquepil and Machi Celestino Córdova, the freedom fighter for common cause Benjamin Méndez Zamorano decided to join the strike, supporting the petition and also to raise his own. And a dry hunger strike has started since Tuesday, March 3. Today he has taken the measure and he has sewed his lips. His situation is critical because he has kidney damage. Therefore, we hold the State directly responsible for his health situation and for his life. Since this is the one that has impoverished the entire society, not only the most humble Mapuche.
We call for visibility, solidarity and dissemination of this mobilization so that his request is heard and he does not continue to compromise his life.
In this context, a march has been called for this March 25 at 10:30 am in Temuco hospital plaza:
Below we disseminate updated information on the status of the mobilization
URGENT INFORMATION ON THE STATE OF HEALTH OF JUAN CHEUQUETA PPM IN HUNGER STRIKE.
We inform the Mapuche Nation People and the non-Mapuche brothers that as of today March 8, 2020 Juan Cheuqueta, Machi Celestino Córdova and Benjamín Mendez are serving 11 days of hunger strike in the Temuco prison.
Kiñe: That our lamieng Juan Cheuqueta has shown a rapid deterioration in his state of health, yesterday and today has been with indigestion, which has triggered dehydration and today in the afternoon presents a feverish picture, so he has been taken to the jail infirmary. Due to this, he will be transferred at any minute to the Temuco Regional Hospital.
Epu: The hunger strike began on February 27 and has the following request:
1.- TRANSFER TO THE CET OF THE MAPUCHE POLITICAL PRISONERS AND NON-MAPUCHE ADHERENT TO THE SOCIAL CLAIMS.
2.- ENABLING OF A SPECIAL MODULE FOR ALL PRISONERS REGARDLESS OF THE CAUSE, BELONGING TO THE ORIGINATING PEOPLES. ACCORDING TO OUR LIVES AND CUSTOMS.
3.- MODIFICATION OF THE PENITENTIARY REGULATION, DECREE LAW N518.
4.- DEMAND FOR LAND, TERRITORY AND NATURAL RESOURCES.
Kula: The call is to keep an eye on the health situation of the strikers, to continue carrying out actions of repudiation of the different violations of rights that are being exercised and to carry out mobilization and actions. In the course of time it has been demonstrated that to advance our rights we need to mobilize since these are not resolved by just talking.
Finally, we convened a great march for this Wednesday, March 25 at 10:30 a.m. in Plaza Hospital de Temuco and invited the different regions to the call and to join together and raise activities for that day by raising our request.
