Coronavirus. Saint-Nazaire. France. March 17, 2020. Are the lives of the workers less important than their profits?

This Tuesday, March 17, several hundred workers at the Atlantic shipyards in Saint-Nazaire walked off the job. Gathered in front of door 4 of the shipyards, they don’t understand why they have to go to work when the government is calling for people to stay home because of the pandemic: “there are more than 10,000 of us working here while everyone is confined! “The CGT demands the closure of the company: “Everyone must stay at home, paid 100% of their wages, temporary workers and sub-contractors included! If our bosses are irresponsible, not us!”
Every day, workers have to “board” the ships under construction. Among them is the luxurious Celebrity Apex, which is due to be delivered and set sail by the end of the week.
“While there is a ban on gatherings and people are asked to stay home and not even go to parks, here we all rub shoulders. No gel, no masks. The management has only offered small measures!” Also in Saint-Nazaire, the Airbus factory preferred to close temporarily, under pressure of the employees.
