Notes From #Pazarkule / #Evros, Eighteenth Day

Pazarkule. Turkey. March 17, 2020. Today, refugees are no longer allowed to leave the camp, and all cafés in Karaağaç have been closed. We have heard from our friends in the area that up to 300 special forces were in the area, the administration has announced that this night will be the last day because of suspected corona virus.

On the other hand, there are rumours that those who have an identity card will be sent to the cities where they came from and those without papers will be sent to Kilis. We have heard that especially the Syrians are travelling to Istanbul by bus. Also our friends on the spot explained that they are waiting for today’s EU-TR summit and that their hopes and the idea that “we will either go through this gate or we will die” are still alive.

One person said that after yesterday’s fighting in the camp, the police separated the Syrians, Iraqis and Somalis as one group from the Afghans, Iranians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis as another group by a corridor, and the gendarmerie did not allow any interaction between these two groups.

We learned that the aid provided by UNICEF was only allowed to take place between 10.30 and 14.00 during the day. In addition, the underwater reconnaissance team of the gendarmerie is said to have entered the area yesterday, it is possible that there may have been fatalities in Meriç (in the river).

Our friends said that they couldn’t charge their cell phones because they couldn’t get out of the camp and that the batteries of the Powerbank were running out and that after a while contact with the outside world could be completely cut off. They also said that they were concerned about the conflict between the different groups in the camp.
