relative social peace – anarchist intervention in local politics has been pushed into the shadows. After decades of insurrectionary agitation and action, things slowed down – folks left, faced repression, struggled with the daily onslaught of capitalism, or for their owns reasons took a step back. Yet in the shadows is where we thrive, and more recently anarchist action and analysis has been occurring on a semi-public stage in so called Vancouver.

While the Corona pandemic has already killed thousands of people and will kill many more, Amazon warehouses continue to operate 24/7. Governments around the world order social distancing, but at the same time they force workers to continue to work. Amazon packages flow through cities that, due to the high spread of the virus, have been sealed off from the rest of the world. In countries where the public is prohibited from gathering, Amazon is allowed to operate as a “state within the state”, free to endanger and exploit us, while we continue to work by the thousands in enclosed spaces. Subcontracted truck drivers and couriers – the veins of our global economy – move the virus between warehouses. Uncountable totes pass between worker hands and facilities. In effect, Amazon forces workers to risk infecting each other and then bringing the virus home to our families, allowing for its further spread.

Durban. South Africa. March 29, 2020. The national government made a clear promise that there would be no evictions during the national shutdown implemented to slow the spread of the coronavirus. However today, at around 12:30, Calvin Security returned to the Ekuphumeleleni settlement in Mariannhill, which falls under the eThekwini Municipality, and demolished 5 houses. This the second eviction aimed at our movement during the national shutdown and it is a direct violation of a promise made by national government, and a direct attack on the most vulnerable people in this time of crisis.

Lesvos. Greece. March 29, 2020. As the goverment of greece makes it clear they are closing moria step by step, what is there more say? From all sorts of organisations, collectives and institutions it has been made clear that the people must be evacuated now. But it doesn’t matter. While they systematicly close Moria more and more with the excuse of corona, they will soon start to build a closed camp. From the month of May, the greek goverment will no longer supply people with the basic allowance that gives at least some means to feed themselves, buy phone credit to stay in contact with relatives etc. This until at some undetermined time in the future they will place ATM’s inside the camp. Some of the people that dared to make the crossing from turkey to greece in the last week are still packed in unhcr tents on the shores where they landed, unable to move.

March 25, 2020. I have just posted the introduction to my Kropotkin anthology Direct Struggle Against Capital. Hopefully, something interesting to read if you are self-isolating – although I would recommend you buy the book from AK Press as it has a lot of interesting and often rare works by Kropotkin in it. Here I plan to make a few comments about the coronavirus crisis and Brexit. These follow on from my recent discussion of how an Anarchy would handle such events – and as with that blog, there may be more typos than usual…
