D.i.Y.Culture #London – Make Politicians History

London. UK. April 4, 2020. In the UK, do we really have to wait another 5 years (at least) for even a glimpse of social justice through the ballot-box?

Submitted to Enough 14.

“Anarchism, to me, means not only the denial of authority, not only a new economy, but a revision of the principles of morality. It means the development of the individual, as well as the assertion of the individual. It means self-responsibility, and not leader-worship.”

Voltairine de Cleyre

Make Politicians History?

In the UK, do we really have to wait another 5 years (at least) for even a glimpse of social justice through the ballot-box? Another round of Labour Party positioning and politicking has finished with a whimper, completely overshadowed by Covid-19. A knight of the realm for fucks sake, as another shitty Labour leader who will attempt to play the ruling classes at their own rigged game, without a hope in hell of winning – diversionary, inward-looking, navel-gazing once again, far from the real issues that affect real people in this country.

Just imagine if all those thousands of hours of canvassing, meetings, leafleting and campaigning for mistrusted, out of touch, growth-bound, obsolete, and state-owned political parties, were transferred into building strong and vibrant community groups based upon mutual-aid and solidarity (and actually, mutual aid is on display in communities across the globe at the moment). Where people’s voices are actually heard, where decision-making about our everyday lives and what happens in our communities, would be carried out at a grass-roots, truly democratic level, instead of being passed down from on-high by the ‘free-market’ and by systematically-corrupted, careerist, local and national politicians.

Imagine getting face to face with the sometimes ‘politically-imperfect’ people, but on a human basis, without somebody else’s axe to grind, away from the elitist political echo-chamber, away from the boring activist-bubble and away from the endless, cynical quest for electoral gain.

Imagine organising with your neighbours, for your community, in your streets – looking out for each other’s physical and mental well-being, working against the social and class-cleansing of our cities, occupying the commons once again (metaphorically and in reality), mass-expropriation of the empty ‘investment’ buildings that blight our skylines, starting community-based food projects, ignoring those obsolete gravy-train politicians, leaving no-one behind and taking control of our own lives.
