To my friends in Sweden and elsewhere

Riot Turtle wrote an open letter to his friends in Sweden and elsewhere in times of the coronavirus.

Irony: (from Ancient Greek εἰρωνεία eirōneía, meaning ‘dissimulation, feigned ignorance’), in its broadest sense, is a rhetorical device, literary technique, or event in which what appears, on the surface, to be the case, differs radically from what is actually the case.

Sarcasm is “a sharp, bitter, or cutting expression or remark; a bitter gibe or taunt”.Sarcasm may employ ambivalence, although sarcasm is not necessarily ironic.

Dear friends,

In most European states full lockdowns are in effect for about a month now. In Germany its called “contact-ban”.

I apologize that so many people here in Germany are bashing Sweden, but there is a problem. Sweden is walking out of line. While many people are celebrating full lockdowns, governing by decree and other authoritarian measures that are imposed on them by their rulers, people in Sweden still can go in a bar socialize. They can look in each other’s eyes, they can see each other’s facial expression and their body language. They don’t live exclusively in the virtual world. They refuse!

Okay some precautions were taken, only less than 50 people can be at the same place at the same time to avoid contagion. People are advised to keep distance and people in bars and restaurants people are only served at tables. But people can still meet. Its outrageous! You cannot just continue to live. Do you actually still hug people in Sweden? Touch each other? That’s murder!

Here we don’t talk about the fact that the German government, including the wizards of the federal health authority of the “Robert koch Institute” (RKI), were still downplaying the coronavirus in mid-February. “Its like a flu” and its “nothing to worry about,” they said. They didn’t order protective equipment for health care workers and others, but hey: who cares! We now have a contact-ban and although nobody knows what the mid- and long-term effects on society will be, most people here think it’s good to cancel basic rights overnight. It will help to control the virus, and not to overstretch hospital capacities. This is not the right time to fight for a free society after a revolution, some parts of the left say. Its not even the right time for so-called democracy. Fck parliament, we need decrees!

But to come back to the start of this letter, there is one problem. We need more bashing against the Swedish authorities. Yes I know I apologized but lets just forget about that. What if the Swedish approach works? It would show that all the fines and other forms of repression against people who broke curfews and contact-bans were for… well.. nothing. At least what the coronavirus concerns. Not to mention the psychological damage inflicted by lockdowns and contact-bans. The suicide rates that might jump, the homeless that were harassed by cops because they didn’t stay home, in the home they don’t have. That’s inacceptable. There are only two possibilities, either Sweden comes in line, or the Swedish approach must fail!

At the moment our rulers still manage that an incredible majority in Germany support contact bans, do what they are told and admire the wizzards of the RKI. However this could change when people find out that the Swedish approach may actually work. Even parts of the German left are indefatigably pointing out that many people are dying in Sweden. Some of them seem to be delighted because it prooves that the authoritarian measures of the German are appropriate. Fck basic rights! We have a pandemic! Whats worrying though is that Swedish authorities seem to rely on common sense, and tell people: please keep distance. They actually seem to think that people can think for themselves. That’s dangerous and intolerable! Especially as it looks like that the curve is also flattening in Sweden. That is indeed worrying, because that might proof that people actually are able and do think for themselves.

Here in Germany we don’t need people to think for themselves. We actually have a lot of experience with authoritarianism. Our federal health minister, Jens Spahn, knows what is good for us in these difficult days. He is a skilled banker, so he is a virus expert. I mean, there are people who claim that capitalism is the most deadly virus on this planet. I guess that makes every banker to an expert. Spahn was one of the people who told us until mid-February: “Its nothing to worry about”, “its just like a flu”, so let him govern by decree.

At some point this will all be over, and when Sweden comes in line, we all can go back to normal. i.e. we can continue with an economic model that eventually will kill us all by continuing to put our efforts in destroying the planet, selling arms all over the world and keep people depending on wage labor. Wouldn’t that be great? At the same time we will be safe, because the state has a much tighter control over potential quacksalvers. After all we are all potential virus propagators. Of course there are also infidels, the potential offenders, who refuse to install Corona apps. But with the right repression we will bring them on their knees.

In the post-corona era we will live in a secure envirenment, where people are happy to obey and do what they are told. So I ask my friends in Sweden and elsewehere one more time: Please walk in line.

Riot Turtle, April 18, 2020.

P.S. Cut the crap! Don’t even think about fighting for a free society with justice for all! Freedom and social justice are overrated! Enjoy your shackles!
