#Hamilton, #Ontario: Keep your CERB, keep your rent! No bailout for landlords

Hamilton. Ontario. In the last week, tens of thousands of Hamiltonians have applied for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), the government’s COVID-19 income support package which provides payments of $2,000/month for up to four months. In this post we look into the nuts and bolts of the CERB rollout and consider what the government hopes to accomplish by ladling out all this cash.

In support of Pizza Hut workers, Croydon Solidarity Network, a mutual aid group of workers around Croydon and Mitcham, called for those able to, to gather outside Lewisham Pizza or Wandsworth Pizza Hut on Saturday, 25th April at 5.30pm. #Gemany: On the call of SDA/IFA for articles for #Gaidao special edition on the “Pandemic State of emergency”

The comrades of the Federation of German-speaking anarchists want to publish a Gaidao special edition on the “Pandemic State of emergency” and call on text posts by May 20. A supportive initiative that will certainly produce an interesting online newspaper. —- Here’s the Call for Papers: —- Anarchist perspectives on the social crises associated with the Corona pandemic —- The world is facing the most violent pandemic since 1918 between the health crisis and economic standstill. Governments prescribe behaviors, initiate full bundles of measures at an urgent pace, explain the shutdown, and lace of laws to mitigate the economic follow-up costs of the crisis. Since it became more serious in the German-speaking countries, the crisis has also been used to demonstrate the strong state and to present a powerful collective experience to the population through media fireworks.

Scrubs: The Story from the Bottom Up

UK. Much like the elderly forced to walk laps and climb stairs to raise money for the NHS, the scrubs movement has been popularised by mainstream media as part of a ‘national effort’ at a time of ‘war’ fighting an ‘enemy’ we allegedly cannot see. We are being encouraged to paint rainbows and clap for the bravery of the health workers, when in reality we are sending them to their deaths. As of today (19/4/2020), at least 86 health and social care workers have died of COVID-19. The enemy is not invisible, it has been sitting in the leathered seats of parliament, imposing years of austerity which have left the health system bare to the bone; it has criminalised and worn down benefit claimants with strategies of surveillance, sanctions and deterrence; it has exploited the labour of key workers living hand to mouth, whilst endowing inessential services with bonuses, tax rebates and bailouts.

May 7 – Call to action from North Carolina prisoner Joseph “Shine White” Stewart

“Any resulting (deliberately manufactured) situations then validate official claims of “problems” with gang violence justifying their demonizing labels and pre-designed intentions to enhance measures of repression and official violence against ethnic youth, demands for increased public funding for crime and “gang” control, expanding the prison and militarized police structures.”

Minister of Defense Kevin Rashid Johnson

#Zurich: Hands off #Juch! It won’t be evicted for the time being!

Zurich. Switzerland. Thanks to political pressure and solidarity from various sides, we have succeeded in preventing the plans of the property management to evict the Juch area, which are hardly to be surpassed in their lack of transparency and arbitrariness, for the time being. We are pleased about this and thank you for all your support. However, this is only a one-month postponement until May 22, 2020. The reasons for the initial secrecy on the part of the city regarding the plans for the area may have become obvious now.

Class War Daily 22 April 2020: Demand more!

UK. The other day I was talking to a union rep who works in a call centre. Asking her how her members were getting on, she told me that a lot of them were reassessing their lives in the light of the Covid-19 crisis. “They’ve all been looking at the careers support tools – cos, let’s face it, no matter how lucky management try to tell us we are, working in a call centre is a shit job – and a lot of them don’t want to go back to that!”. From what I hear they are not the only ones.
