#Athens, #Greece: Statement on the events of the last weeks in Viktoria square and the migrant struggle

Athens. Greece. At 4:30 in the morning on the 17th of June, squads of riot police surrounded Plateia Viktoria and forced around 16 sleeping families — about 71 children and 44 adults — onto busses. They were taken to the Eleonas Refugee Camp. The families had spent the last several days resisting attempts to put them onto busses. They wanted homes and safety. They didnot want to go to another refugee camp. All of the families had spent months in Moria living indirty and dangerous conditions. They had arrived in Athens a few days earlier and slept onthe pavement of the Plateia. The families asked why they were being punished, abandoned, and denied basic human rights.

Vienna. What’s been going on in Vienna’s 10th district Favoriten over the last few days? According to media reports, there has been a confusing pile of information and demonstrations as well as alleged “counter-demonstrators”. For most of the media, the police and politicians, the events would result from a “war imported from abroad” between different “ethnic groups”, which is now being continued in the “problematic district” Favoriten. With this statement we try to give a first assessment of the situation, want to point out missing pieces of antifascist work in Vienna and discuss perspectives.

Out of State, Out of Mind: Media Narratives and the Recent Protest Movement

Paid organizers for the communists are only trying to get good negroes in trouble. Alabama is a good place for good negroes to live in, but it is a bad place for negroes who believe in SOCIAL EQUALITY.” If you updated the language and added some flavor-of-the-day woke terminology to these sentences from a 1930s pamphlet, they wouldn’t look out-of-place on a pundit’s Twitter feed these past few weeks. Recently, every esteemed media progressive has responded to the protests erupting throughout the country with all the support and promises to “listen” that you would expect, but with the condition that things remain peaceful. Such ruling-class demand for the perfect “peaceful” protest has led to denunciations of those that don’t as “agitators” and “looters”. As you may have guessed, the sentences in the aforementioned pamphlet are followed by “The Ku Klux Klan is watching you. TAKE HEED”. This matter is worth exploring.
