BREATHS OF FREEDOM-FROM AMERICA TO GREECE

A video went around the world: M Chauvin, a police officer who has been accused of racist violence dozens of times in the past, stomped on the head of black proletarian George Floyd with his boot, murdering him.

Floyd’s state murder was the trigger for the outbreak of a rebellion that spreads across many of the states of America and continues to this day. “I can’t breathe” shout the rebels, reproducing Floyd’s last words. With over 100,000 deaths and over 40 million unemployed during the pandemic, in conditions of extreme socio-economic inequality and poverty, widespread gun control and institutionalised racism, the outbreak of mass protests and armed conflict is the manifestation of social competition in recent decades. More dead on the battlefield, both protesters and policemen. In this social war, the US declare cities an “emergency”, put the military on alert and enlist white fascists on the streets, while black proletarians rally their communities, their thirst for social justice, the common struggle with solidarity.

A few months ago, in Chile they wrote: ‘we will not return to normality, because normality is the problem’. The video of Floyd’s cold-blooded murder from the boot of capitalist power is shocking, but we all know that it captures the normality of capitalist violence and its police bodies around the world, from America to Greece: Alexis Grigoropoulos, Jacques Kostopoulos, immigrants and refugees in Evros, on the islands, in the center of metropolises, all of them murdered by the Greek state. Because the Greek state is a miniature of the American state: If the US has gone down in history for its war operations in the Middle East and Africa, for its terrorist intervention in Latin America, for the role of the “global gendarme” over the last few years, they are simply doing what any developed capitalist state would like to do, and Greece, which participates with its own powers and for its own capitalist interests in war operations in the Middle East and Africa, stands as a gendarme in the South-East Mediterranean as well, has filled its territory with immigrants’ concentration camps, while at the same time shielding itself at home against the “people-enemy”, the workers, the immigrants, the oppressed social majority. From America to Greece, the capitalist recovery from the crisis requires a new “national unity”, a new legitimacy of the social war of the bosses towards us.

This is why we want to stand against institutionalised racism and the class hatred of every capitalist nation-state that is directed towards the social majority of the oppressed with anti-war and internationalist solidarity. We are filled with hope and life by the circle of uprisings that broke out after 2008, the “Arab Spring”, the strikes, the social movements, the new circle of uprisings that broke out just before the arrival of ‘Covid-19’, in France, Ecuador, Chile, Lebanon, Colombia and elsewhere. We are filled with life and hope by the oppressed crowds flooding the streets by claiming their right, discovering their collective bodies and forcing the capitalist states -which are in a triple economic, health and social crisis of 2020 and 2008- to respond increasingly violently,

increasingly reactively, while seeking new methods of integrating and controlling social resistance.”We can’t breathe”: these last words finally identify the oppressed of the whole world, who suffocate in capitalist normality.
