United! Seeks To Win In #VT’s 3rd Largest Union

Vermont. Jerold Kinney for VSEA president.

Submitted to Enough 14.

VERMONT STATE EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION UNITED!

A PROGRAM FOR UNION POWER

COVID-19: HEALTH & SAFETY COME FIRST!
During COVID-19, VSEA members shall deliver essential services. However, health & safety of Union members must come first.  We must fight for safe working conditions & PPE for all Union members.

AGENCY OF TRANSPORTATION/VTRANS MUST BE ITS OWN BARGAINING UNIT!
It’s time for VSEA to go to the Labor Board to ask that AOT/VTrans become its own bargaining unit within VSEA.

LET THE COPS GO!
Police have been asking to leave our Union for years. VSEA has always fought this.  Many VSEA members are weary of police being in our Union. Therefore the time has come for VSEA to support the request of Law Enforcement to leave.

TIME FOR A NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR!
VSEA Executive Director Steve Howard values relations with the Democratic Party leadership over building a more militant Union (one not afraid to stand up to Governors & politicians).  Therefore Howard’s contract should not be renewed.

UNION DEMOCRACY!
We must amend VSEA bylaws to allow for more member involvement in decision making. Under no circumstances should staff be empowered to arrange for testimony on controversial subjects without members first adopting an official position on the matter.

WORKING CLASS UNITY!
We must oppose fascism and discrimination in all forms.  We are strong when we are united as Union members and as one working class.

OUR SOCIAL PROGRAM!
We must fight for an expansion of social programs that benefit all working class people. We must fight to make sure these programs are paid for through progressive taxation (and not having new burdens placed on working people).

POPULAR FRONT!
We must seek to coordinate our efforts with allied-progressive Unions and with community organizations in order to build a stronger Labor Movement.

GREEN NEW DEAL!
Post COVID-19 we must implement a progressive economic recovery. We must support investment in public infrastructure that results in a healthy environment and Union jobs.  All such construction projects involving public money must be done through Union labor. Newly built facilities, such as renewable energy plants, should be publicly owned and maintained by Union labor.

ELECTORAL POLITICS!
We must NOT support candidates that do not actively support us (VT Speaker of the House Mitzi Johnson-D is not our friend); Party affiliation does not matter.

WORKING CLASS DEMOCRACY!
Working people should have a direct vote and say concerning the laws of the land.  We must fight to implement a Town Meeting based referendum system of government.

PRIORITY ON ORGANIZING!
We must dedicate more resources to organizing. VSEA must look to Unionize unorganized public employees. We must also put focus on internal organizing.

WE ARE NOT AFRAID OF STRIKES!
One of the most powerful tools at our disposal is the withholding of our labor.  While State employee strikes are illegal, it is also true that wildcat strikes work!  Therefore, VSEA must build our strength internally so that a strike, legal or not, is a real option.  We must never laydown in the face of mistreatment from the State!

Jerold Kenney, The United! Candidate For VSEA President & An Agency of Transportation Worker, Is Endorsed By: Former VSEA 1st Vice President Michelle Salvador, VSEA Treasurer Jackie Hickerson, VSEA Clerk Josh Cox, VSEA Trustee William Wells, VSEA Trustee and VSEA Waterbury Chapter President Brett Pierce, VSEA Chittenden Chapter President John Davy.

*If Kenney wins, it would mean that both the 10,000 member Vermont AFL-CIO, and the 7000 member (independent) Vermont State Employees Association would be “United!” unions  with a shared progressive platform.  “United!” took over the leadership in VT AFL-CIO elections in 2019. This would mark a huge leftward shift in the Green Mountain State’s Labor Movement.  Voting among VSEA members is being conducted on line now, through the first week of September, 2020.
