Lesvos. Greece. Greek police evicted most migrants from the area around Karatepe on Lesvos today. People were forced to move into a new internment camp. The EU member states seem to stick with the right-wing Greek government which is determined to continue its inhuman policies against migrants.
In the early morning hours the Dunya Collective published a short update on their Telegram Channel, saying:
“Currently, the Greek police have concentrated their forces in the Kara-Tepe area. Thousands are out there on the streets. They want freedom of movement and they want to leave this island, because it’s a place which means infinite suffering for many. Lot’s of refugees refuse to go to the new camp. They are afraid that a second moria, a second hell will arise there.
The new camp is not finished, yet. There are only dixitoilets available. In the tents there are no solid floors. They are built on the bare earth. The camp is located on an old shooting range of the army. Yesterday pictures of ammunition remnants went through the social media. Nobody knows exactly what is lurking in the ground there. With great certainty it is chemically contaminated. It is cynical to want to house people on a contaminated military area. Not only because many of the refugees have fled from war. The police must stop using physical and emotional violence against the fugitives (We think this is a mistake in the translation, probably the accurate translation is not fugitives but refugees, Enough 14) ! Their demand for freedom of movement is political. They are human individuals, not numbers in an administrative act.”Dunya Collective, Telegram Channel
After the riot cops that were already present in the area around Karatepe, were reinforced with additional riot cops and equipment this morning, they started to evict refugees from the area. People were forced into a new new internment camp. According to media reports there is no running water there, people get 1,5 liter of water in bottles. The number of people with COVID-19 is riding in the new camp. According to the Dunya Collective there are 77 COVID-19 cases in the new camp now.
The new camp will be held in Quarantane, just like Moria was since March. According to several media reports there now 5000 people in the internment camp, because that is what it actually is. But although authorities did everything to break the spirit of people, protests continue:
The racist border policies of the European Union and its member states continue. Its up to change that.
