Hundreds of activists block highway construction site in Dannenrod forest

Dannenrod. Germany. December 5, 2020. 800 activists have been blocking the highway construction site in Dannenrod forest in the German state of Hesse since the early morning hours. They are protesting against climate destruction by new highways and for an immediate change in traffic policies.

“We no longer accept that governments destroy the climate for the profits of car manufacturers. We stop car capitalism here and now,” says Ronja Weil, spokeswoman for Ende Gelände. “What we need now is a fundamental traffic reversal: Climate protection means that we scrap the German car industry.”

In one last tree-house village, climate activists are currently opposing the deforestation in order to stop the expansion of the A49 highway. The black-green state government is under pressure because of the police operation during which several activists were seriously injured. This weekend, besides Ende Gelände, environmental organizations such as BUND and Greenpeace, activists from Fridays for Future and local residents are protesting against the highway construction.

“This weekend we show: Anyone who wants to build new highways in the middle of the climate crisis is challenging the entire climate movement. If the government doesn’t stop the car madness, we will do it ourselves”, Ronja Weil added.
