The new lockdown makes the German state nervous: Will things explode on New Years Eve?

Germany. More and more people are aware of the fact that we are not all in this together, and we never were.

I have written a lot about the authoritaran state measures in Germany in the past eight months. The last piece was right after the introduction of what our rulers called: “lockdown light”.

The so-called lockdown light didn’t work, which is actually not suprising. The lockdown light killed social life by closing bars, restaurants and social centers, but left the capitalist motor kept running. Although it became clear during the summer that workplaces are one of the places with major Corona outbreaks, bars and restaurants with their hygiene concepts are not know for such outbreaks. Even the German federal authority Robert Koch Institute (RKI) admitted that. We all remember the Corona outbreaks during the asparugus harvest. We rember the outbreaks in the slaughterhouses and more recently at one of the Amazon facilities in Germany. So yes it was not a surprise that the Lockdown light didn’t work. People continued to be forced to go to work and school.

Yesterday a hard lockdown started, most shops are closed now and students get distance education. But actually its not a real hard lockdown. Even in areas, like Bavaria, where there is a curfew, the authoritarian state measures are limited to bans on social life and minor parts of the capitalist machinery. People are allowed to break the curfew to go to work. So again people will be crammed in buses and trains to go to work.

The German economy is an export economy, and the production of export products is again untouched. Where there are bans with huge fines and police repression for people’s social life, there are advices for corporations (“Please, as much homeoffice as possible”) and churches (“It would be good if there would be no bigger mass celebrations”). The catholic church already announced that the mass celebrations will continue during the lockdown. And yes.. there were major Corona outbreaks in German churches.

So while people are still exposed to major risks of Corona infecftions on their workplaces and in churches, social life is being massively restricted with authoritarian decrees. The capacities of hospitals are on the edge, but no politician talks about the reduction of these capacities by cuts and privatisations in the past years. Nobody speaks about the privatizations and cuts in special-care homes and retirement homes. In Germany, most people that die from COVID-19 are living in special-care homes. Special-care homes have nice brochures and other advertising methods, but they are there to make profit. Like privatized hospitals are there to make profit. Thats the priority. Care and health come second. That’s also not surprising, its the logic consequence of a capitalist society.

Zoonoses are caused by our capitalist system. We rob more and more living spaces of animals for our new highways, factories, urban settlements etc. etc. We have entered a phase now where there is not much living space left for animals. COVID-19 wasn’t the first, but certainly won’t be the last virus that will be transmitted from animals to humans. In the coming decades zoonoses are likely to increase. Capitalism is destroying life of all living beings. Including humans.

The state didn’t gave people the chance to find their own ways how to deal with the virus. Ofcourse not, the priority is and always was the economy. People could develope ideas to reduce contacts at work. They could get the idea that the commodities they hace to produce for the profits of share holders are actualy no necessities. People could get the idea that working 8 hours in a production facility is maybe more dangerous than meeting a few friends in a park.

The state and its media lackeys are spreading the myth about irresponsible citizens who still dare to meet each other, while the same state and media are not questioning that people are forced to go to work, and I don’t mean necesarry work, like people working in hospitals, the food sector or other important sectors that do or produce things that people absolutely need. I am speaking about all these useless jobs that are only there to increase profits but actually have no real value for human life.

Social life is banned to somehow slow down the spread of the virus to keep the death toll “acceptable”. Acceptable for the legitimacy of the capitalist system itself. Because yes, the ruling class has fear that the fact that capitalism and zoonoses are related with each other could cause growing resistance against the capitalist system. Rapidly. The ecomomic crisis that accompanies COVID-19 will also provoke new anti-capitalist battles.

The ban on life itself, like the ban on New Years Eve celebrations and curfews in a growing number of areas across the German territory will provoke resistance. I am not speaking abou the lateral thinkers movement with their far-right and conspiracy theorists, I firmly reject their positions, I am speaking about youths, like the youths that exploded in Stuttgart earlier this year. There were massive riots with clashes with cops and looting after the cops tried to enforce authoritarian Corona state measures.

I am convinced that the ban on fireworks sales have nothing to do with the capacity in hospitals. That’s a fairytale that our authoritarian rulers try to make us believe. If they were serious about that they would have stopped all “irrelevant” work and would stop car traffic immediately. Many accidents happen at workplaces and traffic on a daily basis, not just on New Years eve. Our rulers know that beneath the surface society is simmering. After nine months of authoritarian Corona state measures with cops who behave like little kings in our neighbourhoods things could explode easily on New Years Eve. A ban on the sale of fireworks could help to maintain order. Just like the ban on any kind of gatherings during New Year’s Eve could help to maintain order. But it might acually not work, these bans could actually provoke a revolt. More and more people are not willing to accept the New Year’s eve bans and want to hit the street. Despite what the polls say, the mood is unmistakable. More and more people reckonize that the state won’t save them. The state is prioritizing the economy before life.

We need a self-determined way to deal with the COVID-19 virus. We neither need a state, nor their political clowns. Yes many might miss the imagination of a life without a state, but states are playing an important role to maintain the capitalist order and to supress life. Even so-called democratic states showed us very clear this year that they can and will take away our rights as they please. COVID-19 gives us an idea how the captalist states will react when the climate catastrophy will hit us with full force. And it will when we dont abolish capitalism. It will be an authoritarian nightmare. I regard states as enemies of life. We are not human ressources for share holders. We all need our social life. We all need love and affection, something that neither the state, nor the surrogate Digital internet sphere can ever give us. What we need is a self-determined life. A self-detemined New Year’s Eve could be a good starting point.
