The consequences of the choice of those responsible are not limited to the hunger striker. If the hunger striker Dimitris Koufontinas is murdered, a black page in history will bear the signatures of Chrysochoïdis, Mitsotákis and Sakellarópoulou in the social consciousness and will represent another barbarity in a series of state provocations for society that has been put under high pressure.

At the time of writing, activist Dimitris Koufontinas is on the 55th day of his hunger strike with his only demand is a transfer to Korydallos Prison, as his transfer to Domokou Prison was illegal by law. Given that there is a special high-security wing at Korydallos Women’s Prison where Dimitris Koufontinas has served most of his sentence and where convicts are held in complete isolation, it would be practical and legal to fulfill his demand immediately if there wouldn’t be the obvious vindictiveness of government officials who have chosen to irreversibly damage his health and methodically lead him to death.

Of course, the ND government surprises no one with its attitude towards Dimitris Koufontinas when, under the pretext of fighting the pandemic, it abolished basic democratic rights by establishing a suffocating police state in which freedom of movement and the right to demonstrate are suspended and society is left to bleed economically, and whose police invade universities and beat up students. At the same time, bills are being imposed without any approval that erode labor rights, push through provocative bills targeting children, restrict prisoners’ rights, and deny relief to prisons where inmates are massively exposed to the COVID-19 virus and where countless and unannounced deaths occur.

With all of the above, it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish the regime from a dictatorship. However, the murder of a hunger striker is an act that even the junta of the colonels did not dare to do. The Greek state is becoming extremely fascist and is now trying to align itself with Erdogan’s Turkey. The responsibility for the imminent state murder obviously lies with the Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoïdis, his political superior, the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotákis and the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellarópoulou. The government’s revenge against Dimitris Koufontinas is now uncovered, so the only way – and the ultimate responsibility – to find a solution to this hunger strike now seems to lie with the President of the Republic.

The consequences of the choice of those responsible are not limited to the hunger striker. If the hunger striker Dimitris Koufontinas is murdered, a black page in history will bear the signatures of Chrysochoïdis, Mitsotákis and Sakellarópoulou in the social consciousness and will represent another barbarity in a series of state provocations for a society under high pressure. The social explosion is inevitable, and even if it does not manifest itself in the immediate future, the imminent state murder remains indelible in social memory.
