All Out! Demonstration and forest walk: Osterholz stays! [Wuppertal, Germany]

Wuppertal. Germany. Apart from the Osterholz forest occupation, there is also a citizens inititiative that fights against the planned deforestation. The citizens inititiative Osterholz Bleibt (Osterholz stays) is calling for a demonstration on January 2, 2022, 02:00 p.m., Station forecourt of the Wuppertal-Vohwinkel train station.

On January 02, 2022, the Osterholz Stays Forest Walk will start as a demonstration through parts of Wuppertal-Vohwinkel. The demonstration starts at 02:00 pm (14:00) at the station forecourt of the Wuppertal-Vohwinkel train station and leads to the Osterholz forest, where we will have another forest walk. It could be the last forest walk before the planned eviction and uprooting operation in the Osterholz forest.

Imagine that the city of Wuppertal requests a climate report from the German Weather Service. Imagine that this report not only states that the temperature in Wuppertal has already risen by 1.4 degrees Celsius, but also that no more green spaces should disappear, even more, in order to slow down the local temperature rise, additional new green spaces should be created. That is one of the results of the expert report for Wuppertal from the German Weather Service, a federal authority. Nevertheless, in the Osterholz once again uprooting is to be carried out. This beautiful forest has been destroyed slice by slice for decades. This time it is about 5.5 hectares and an additional reforestation, which was created as a compensation measure for earlier uprootings.

Even the floods in Wuppertal and Haan-Gruiten in the summer of 2021 will not change this. The climate crisis is already here, but the private interests of the Oetelshofen company seem to outweigh the common good. The company’s project is not about lime extraction, but about a storage place for its waste rock. In their capitalist logic, the lime works want the cheapest solution, because there are several alternative solutions for their waste rock. The Oetelshofen company, however, wants the financially most favorable solution out of greed; the clearing of 5.5 hectares of healthy forest so that they can store their waste there. The costs of the climate crisis are much higher, but since the general public is supposed to pay for it, the lime works don’t care.

On 01 January 2022, at 00:00 a. m., the moratorium will expire. This means that from that moment on, clearing in the Osterholz forest must be expected at any time. The Higher Administrative Court has not yet ruled on the complaint against an immediate enforcement of the deforestation plans of the Oetelshofen company, but the signs are pointing to eviction and deforestation.

The Oetelshofen company has already indicated that it does not want to hold any further round table talks, and the city of Wuppertal also seems to have lost interest. The last discussion took place in a back room between the mayor of Wuppertal, Uwe Schneidewind, and the district administrator of the Mettmann district, Thomas Hendele (CDU). The citizens’ initiative Osterholz Bleibt and local residents who participated in the round table were not welcome in the back room.

However, we will continue to campaign for a systematic climate policy and thus against the eviction of the forest occupation and against the deforestation plans of the Oetelshofen lime works.

All out to the demo on January 02!
