Wuppertal. Germany. Soon the police will come and try to evict and uproot the Osterholzer forest in Wuppertal-Vohwinkel. After there were already strong indications last Monday that the cops would start their operation, there are now strong indications that this will happen on Monday, January 24, or Tuesday, January 25.
After the citizens’ initiative caused maximum confusion on the previous Sunday evening, the cops had to postpone their eviction action against the forest occupation in Osterholz. So on Monday morning there was a fantastic mood, no cops in the forest, except for a few plain clothes cops who probably didn’t feel very comfortable when they saw the shadows of masked people dressed in black moving around them in the forest.
Last week, the cops started to annoy the people from the citizens’ initiative. They demanded that the daily vigil of local residents and supporters had to be moved to another location. Allegedly because the cops could not guarantee the safety of the people there because of the barricades. As a reminder, the vigil has been taking place daily since October. The barricades were there the whole time.
Until now, people refused to move the vigil to another location. Some told the cops that they feel very comfortable and also very safe being near the forest occupation. Many people also made clear that the only thing that worries them and make them nervous is the expected police violence in case of a possible eviction and cutting in the forest.
This week, the cops said they would move the vigil when the grubbing begins. Today they have increased the pressure. Although the vigil is not in the area where the deforestation is planned, it is clear why the cops want to move the vigil: They don’t want eyewitnesses near the forest occupation when they carry out the eviction.
So one of the tactics of the cops will be to keep people at a distance as much as possible so that they can do their job as lackeys of the destruction of life in the forest without being disturbed. Of course, there will be many people in the forest. Of course, besides the vigil, there will be other people who will try to stop a possible eviction and uprooting. Of course there will be people who will make a disaster out of this war against life in the forest.
The cops may think that the playing field is limited to the occupied area of the forest. But creative people can take action anywhere. The variety of tactics used over the past two and a half years will continue on Day X and beyond. Be creative, move in and around the Osterholz Forest, or take action against those responsible for the climate crisis in a place you choose.
Come to the forest now so that we can defend it together!
Jeder Baum Zählt! (Every Tree Counts!), January 21, 2022
There will be a daily vigil from 6:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. close to the occupation. The vigil is asking for support.
On the evening of DAY X, there will be a demonstration with many angry people from Wuppertal-Vohwinkel train station at 6 p.m. (18:00). We will move together into the forest.
