We stand with the democratic society! RiseUp4Rojava’s perspectives on the Russian invasion of Ukraine

With our roots in the movement that built Rojava we stand firmly in solidarity with those who make up what Rêber Apo would define as “the democratic society”, or “the moral and political society”. The solidarity between the peoples that compose democratic society is one of the main pillars that built the Rojava revolution, as is self defense. If one’s community, the place where you have your roots and life is under attack, the democratic society has the right of self defense. This is paramount for our movement.

Six cats, thirty people, four mortar shells. Two weeks in the occupied Kyiv suburb [Ukraine]

For almost two weeks – from February 24th to March 10th – me, thirty other people, and six cats were living in the dormitory of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in the township of Vorzel’, an administrative part of neighbouring Irpin’, so a suburb of Kyiv’s suburb. The majority of the building’s denizens moved out throughout the first couple of days of the Russian-Ukrainian war; I was among those who believed the quiet sleepy Vorzel’, once famous for its health resorts, would be a safe haven. I was proven wrong, and quite spectacularly so. Soon nearby Bucha and Hostomel’ became the arenas of heavy fighting. The only way to Kyiv led through them. Approximately on day four, we realized we were cut off. As the week wore off, we found ourselves under occupation.

Anarchist Black Cross — Irkutsk resumes activities [Russia]

Over the last couple of years, post-Soviet countries have been rocked by popular uprisings that have revived hope for political and social transformation — such as the popular uprising in Belarus in 2020 and in Kazakhstan in 2022. Putin’s regime has acted as a guarantor of dictatorships in both countries, and has strengthened the authoritarian regime in Russia itself over the past two decades. Since the Russian army’s invasion of Ukraine, the Russian regime has conducted a particularly harsh crackdown on all those who disagree with militarism and war, imposing military censorship and tightening its grip on society’s throat in the country.
