Aleksandar Hemon: Fascism is not an idea to be debated, it’s a set of actions to fight

Last night many people protested against former Trump administration chief strategist  and Bolsonaro adviser Steve Bannon and former Bush speechwriter David Frum who were invited to the Munk Debates at Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto. We republish a piece of Aleksandar Hemon on the problem of civility. Hemon was a published writer in former Yugoslavia by the time he was 26. Since 1992 he lives in the United States, where he found himself as a tourist and became stranded at the outbreak of the war in Bosnia. In his piece below Hemon says: “The idea that we’re all in this together and that we must keep talking is dangerous, just as my commitment to friendship was, because we might find ourselves wasting time and anger on a fundamentally unbalanced dialogue, where one side is armed with ideas, and the other is armed with weapons.” We added some tweets of last nights protests against Bannon in Toronto to Hemon’s piece.
