Notes From #Pazarkule/ #Evros, Tenth Day

Pazarkule. Turkey. March 9, 2020. Our migrant friends who got involved in the conversation have reported the use of plastic bullets and that there are injured people inside including one of them. The injured one was saying: “We are going to pass the border or die. But please do not leave the rest alone.”

Notes From #Pazarkule/ #Evros, Ninth Day

Pazarkule. Turkey. March 8, 2020. Today we learned that it had become even harder for the refugees to leave the designated area to come to Karaağaç. They are now only allowed to use the main checkpoint. They are also required to give fingerprints and accept bodily checks. The soldiers also take pictures of their eyes. As our friend told us, exists started at 10 o’clock in the morning and went on during the day despite the long queues. Our friends waited two hours in the queue and only after that, they reached to Karaağaç. They were still in a positive mood when we met them there.

Notes From #Pazarkule/ #Evros, Eighth Day

Pazarkule. Turkey. March 7, 2020. Today, around noon, The Bridging Peoples Association arrived at Karaağaç. As they were not allowed to enter the area where refugees are, they distributed approximately 150 packages composed of basic needs, on an earth road, which is about 1.5 km behind the Pazarkule border gate. On the other hand, we learned that just a few hours ago, Yavuz Selim cult was able to make a distribution in a place that is slightly closer to the area where refugees are.

Notes From #Pazarkule/ #Evros, Seventh Day

Pazarkule. Turkey. March 6, 2020. We went from Alibey village to the Turkuaz gas station in Uzunköprü, located at a 30 km distance from us. This is the place where the migrants who are sent back from the Greek side are sent to. But we were not allowed to stay here.

Notes from #Pazarkule / #Evros, the Third Day

Pazarkule. Turkey. March 2, 2020. Yesterday we left Pazarkule around 8 pm in order to observe the situation at the Ipsala border crossing. When we were leaving the field, we noticed that the queue of the free food spot, which was finally set up, got too long with long waiting times. The food being distributed were biscuits and snacks which have no nutrition value.

Notes from #Pazarkule / #Evros, the Second Day

Pazarkule. Turkey. March 1, 2020. Yesterday we learned that a friend from Ankara Migrant Solidarity Network was prevented from passing through a police checkpoint, and the photos he/she took were investigated. Parking our cars earlier, in the fields next to the road worked for us though. Although we don’t know how we seemed, no one forced us to leave.  But we decided to be more careful especially while working on photo and video materials. But today, they took all the cars behing the police checkpoint, including ours. For now we have to leave the field. No one is allowed except the migrants and authorities now.

Notes from #Pazarkule / #Evros, the First Day

Pazarkule. Turkey. February 29, 2020. Rain is pouring down. While driving on the way to Edirne, we saw at least 20 taxis passing by, that have Istanbul’s plate number. On the side of the highway, we could barely see shadows of people who are walking to the border.
