Riot Turtle after #Moria burned down to the ground: “When European politicians speak about freedom, they speak about their freedom to repress non-Europeans.”

The atrocities on the Balkanroute and the Mediterranean Sea are happening on a daily basis for years now and everybody in Europe knows it. Now Moria burned down to the ground, and it was not an accident. A personal account on the Balkanroute: Appealing to European politicians doesn’t make sense.

#Lesvos: Second hunger strike in #Moria detention centre this year

Lesvos. Greece. On 26 August 2020, about 60 mostly Arabic-speaking detainees in Moria pre-removal detention centre (PRO.KE.K.A) went on hunger strike. Since 5 March, Greece has been unable to carry out deportations to Turkey as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Detainees have been deprived of freedom for 174 days during which deportation – the only reason for their confinement – has been impossible. They are locked up without justification in conditions designed to drive them to despair.

No Border Kitchen #Lesvos: “#Covid19 provides the perfect opportunity to incease feelings of xenophobia and nationalism.”

Lesvos. Greece. Once again, the lockdown measures have been extended for Moria camp. With the resurgence of covid-19 in many european countries as an excuse, we can only expect this situation to continue indefininitly, and eventually be turned from a permanent state of exception into law. In combination with the new immigration laws, Moria will be defacto visible for the whole world to see for what it, and other structures like it, truly are: Prisons.

New Legal Centre #Lesvos report details collective expulsions in the Aegean Sea

Lesvos. Greece. Greek authorities are unlawfully expelling migrants who have arrived in Greece, and abandoning them at sea on motorless, inflatable vessels. In a report released today by Legal Centre Lesvos, testimonies from 30 survivors detail the systematic, unlawful and inherently violent nature of these collective expulsions.

Image above: In a photo taken by Legal Centre Lesvos from Lesvos island on 17 June 2020, two Greek vessels surround a migrant boat, which GPS coordinates sent to Alarm Phone confirmed was in Greek territorial water. For several hours, the migrant boat was left without assistance. The Turkish Coast Guard later collected the occupants of the boat, returning them to Turkey. Collective expulsions carried out in this manner are contrary to international law, violate individuals’ right to life and right to be free from cruel and degrading treatment, and are in violation of international maritime law obligating rescue at sea.

Racist Europe gives commands, the coast guard has blood on its hands

Throughout the first half year of 2020 a lot of things that where already set in motion been brought to the next level. With a brand new floating fence and an extension of the covid-19 related measures in Moria the greek goverment continues this escalation. Looking back at the first half of the year we can safely conclude that the greek goverment and their european sponsers have done everything in their power to make the situation for migrants as worst as possible. The continued tolerance of the situation and practices of the greek goverment by the european “community” is not a suprise. Slowly we are seeing the true face of the people in power. As the events follow eachother, seemingly forever escalating to a level that is worse then the previous. And in silent apathy the “community” shakes it’s head and continues. When will it end?

No Border Kitchen Lesvos: About the situtation in #Lesvos

Lesvos. Greece. Pushbacks. That will be the word that describes the situation on the Island at the moment. Almost on a daily basis, dinghy’s full of people are being pushed back. Without any consideration for safety, diginity or self determination the hellenic coast guard has been illegally denying people their right to request asylum. To them, these are not people, but only an annoying nousance that has to be kept out of the country at all costs. The pushbacks are not only happening at the sea, but the very idea of allowing migrants to be in europe is being pushed back. The physical presence confined to camps, out of sight and out of mind. Recently the goverment announced that they will strive for all refugee camps in greece to be turned into closed structures. This until “the flows form the opposite Turkish shores stop, so that the issue can reconsidered again by the goverment”. All but rhetoric, because we know the flow will never stop until there is no more structural inequality, racism and war, and they will never open the camps once they are closed. How will this ever end, when the nations of this world continue to profit of the misery and death that they cause?
