No Quarter for Property! Build the Rent Strike

Because you don’t own anything, you have to give money every month to have the right to live under a roof: that’s rent. Rent is nothing but monthly wage-theft, money we’ll never see again. That’s why the question of housing in the capitalist economy has always been linked to the question of work. Because we are forced to work in order to survive, we are forced to live where we find work. This is why many of us live close to places of production or places where commodities circulate, i.e. in big cities, where rents are, as we know, particularly high.

“Words can’t communicate realities like the ones we’re currently experiencing. There can be no words to describe a condition which never existed before, which changes from one moment to the next and which has no known stages or outcomes.”

#RentStrike: Tactics of the Autonomous Tenants Union – VOL. 1

By necessity, ATU’s work often centers around talking to tenants about their “rights” as given to them by the legal system. In our organizing, these rights are referred to as the shield. A shield can protect you, but it cannot win a fight for you. Your rights often can only protect you if you have access to a lawyer, and can fail you on a judge’s whim. You need something more—you need the sword. We offer this zine in hopes that the tools within will help folks to go on the offensive and fight back against their landlords. Because even when the law and the courts ul mately work to serve the landlord class, the power of tenants united will prevail.

Reflections on rent strike Vancouver in times of the #coronavirus

Vancouver. BC. March 29, 2020. So called Vancouver BC has in its most recent years been a place of
